A teenager from Whitland swore his Allegiance to the Queen and officially joined the Army during a short ceremony in Carmarthen.

The ceremony was held at the Army Careers Information Office on Lammas Street and Adam Powell, 16, took part alongside seven others from South West Wales, in the biggest enlistment the Carmarthen office has seen.

Adam will join the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) regiment and is looking forward to starting a new career.

He said: "I've been in Air Cadets for a few years now and I've always been interested in a career with the Army. I'm an ambitious person and so I want to progress to the highest rank I can."

Recruiter Sergeant Lee Rees, of the Army Careers Information Office, said: "I'm honoured to have recruited a record-breaking number for the Carmarthen office. The Oath is definitely an important milestone for soldiers in their Army lives, and from now, they will begin their training before joining their regiment where a bright future awaits them."
