Tenby, although having won their own league, went into the final knowing that they were underdogs against a strong Whitland team that played their rugby in the much stronger Carmarthen League.
With a large crowd and a beautiful sunny spring evening, the final lived up to a fast, physical game that everyone who played and watched fully enjoyed.
Michael 'Penfold' Lewis, the Tenby captain, led the Tenby team on to the field with two mascots, Ella Brace (daughter of stalwart Chris Brace) and Jordon Brace (son of the injured prop Mark Brace).
Tenby kicked off to start the game and straightaway the pack made their intentions clear with some very strong rucking and driving, especially from the experienced Jeremy Rossiter, Gavin Nicholas and Paul Bevan.
Whitland were first on the scoresheet, however, when after a rare visit into the Tenby half, the Seasiders forwards were penalised for going over the top and the Borderers outside-half Scot Penny, kicked a long range effort to make it three-nil.
Straight from the restart Tenby's pack again won good ball from driving runs from James Caine and Simon Morgan and they were awarded a penalty, which the talented Scott McLaughlin slotted over to make it 3-3.
Tenby then began to build on this, repeatedly making inroads towards the Whitland line, but just could not turn good possession into points.
Now Whitland began to come more and more into the game, but excellent tackling from Harry Bolton and Dan Shooter kept their backline at bay.
However, after sound lineout work by their pack, they drove deep into the Tenby half, sucked in the defence and then spread the ball out wide where Matthew Hughes went over in the corner. Scott Penny missed with the conversion attempt, leaving the score at 8-3.
With both teams now trying to play open rugby, it was Tenby again who pushed up field with a good driving run from a lineout by Chris Brace, but again they could not turn pressure into points and then started giving away penalties.
It was from one of these penalties that the Whitland kicking machine, Scott Penney, pushed his forwards 20 yards from the Tenby try-line.
With only a couple of minutes to go before half-time Tenby needed to keep Whitland off the scoresheet, but again from another good lineout ball, they drove forward and with only seconds left scored again through scrum-half Anthony James. Penney this time added the extras with a successful conversion, making the half-time score 15-3 to the Borderers' second string.
Tenby now knew that they had to play catch-up rugby.
A big half-time team talk from Penfold and Chris Brace seemed to have worked as Tenby came out again in the second looking strong and determined not to say die.
The game went from end to end, with Tenby bringing on big Ben Diment for Jeremy Rossiter. Ben, supported by John Hallet, made some good driving runs, with scrum-half Steve Williams always in support like an extra back row forward. James Davies, Robert Thomas and James Newell also had excellent attacking runs, but credit to the Whitland side, who just kept putting in good tackles.
With time running out, Tenby threw caution to the wind and tried to run the ball out of defence, but a stray kick was picked up by the Whitland backs who ran the ball straight back and scored under the posts through Matthew Davies.
With the try again converted, this now made the score 22-3, and with only minutes left Tenby knew that the game was lost, but nevertheless went all out to score a try.
However, with only seconds left on the clock, an error in the Tenby backline led to another Whitland try through number eight Stuart Phillips.
Penny again slotted the conversion, making the score 29-3, and immediately afterwards, the referee, David Street, who had an excellent game, blew for full-time.
Although the Tenby team did not walk up the steps to pick up the cup, they did walk up to collect their League trophy.
Coach Nicky Rees said that he was very proud of all his players, stating that although they had lost to a strong Whitland team, they had all played their hearts out and never gave up; they could all be proud of their efforts.
Nicky and Penfold would like to thank all those who played a part in second team rugby this year, especially as they went unbeaten in their league campaign. Penfold said it takes a close squad of players to make a successful team that wins a league, and he had enjoyed the season immensely.
All the second team squad would also like to thank the large crowd of supporters who travelled to the game and helped make it an excellent atmosphere - not forgetting those who returned to the Tenby United clubhouse afterwards where a good night of celebration was had by all.
In addition to this, the whole 2nd XV would like to congratulate the 1st team on a great season and wish them the very best of luck in their cup campaign.
