The talented Whitland side won the Lloyd Family Ormond Youth Cup Plate for the first time after defeating Hook by 81 runs in the final played at Cresselly.

For the first time in seven years, Whitland were knocked out of the Ormond Youth Cup before reaching the final, after losing by 32 runs away to Cresselly in the first round.

In the postponed Plate Final, Hook scored 79-7 in the first innings of 20 overs, having collapsed after being in a strong position of 60-3 from 11 overs.

Steffan James caused the damage with a 3-19 spell, with other wickets being taken by Daniel James with 2-18, David Dunfee with 1-26 and young Geraint Phillips with the most economical spell of 1-11.

Kate Morris led the scoring with 15 and there were 25 extras.

When the rain came for the first time, Whitland were 44-2 and the players left the field for an early tea.

After the enforced break, Whitland went on to score a huge total of 160-5 from 18 overs.

Not for the first time in club cricket this season, all-rounder David Dunfee was the hero, before being caught and bowled by Tom Blaxland after scoring 96 with four 6s and 13 fours. Dunfee added 95 for the third wicket with Nico Setaro (20).

For Hook, Tom Blaxland took 2-36, Matthew John 2-30 and Josh Britton 1-25.

When rain brought proceedings to a halt and there was no prospect of the match continuing, the coaches of both teams, together with the umpires, Denis Chiffi, of Cresselly, and Haverfordwest-based Arthur Brady, agreed unanimously that the result would be decided on the first innings scores, so Whitland were declared the winners.
