Matters discussed at the June meeting of Whitland Town Council included the following:
One Voice Wales: Due to the cost of annual subscription, it was resolved to cancel council's membership. It was recommended that council subscribe to SLCC at an annual cost of £94. This body would help if any legal advice was needed, plus council would get a monthly magazine.
Flower planting: Clr. Mrs. D. Evans declared an interest. The ATC completed this for the second year. It was agreed that a donation of £100 be made to the ATC for their work and an annual donation of £50 for future years.
Disabled parking outside the Post Office and Gwynfa, North Road: County Clr. Mrs. S. Allen stated that parking outside Gwynfa had been passed after discussion with the resident (now in the hands of Carmarthenshire COunty Council), while the Post Office space was still ongoing with CCC.
Dog fouling: It was proposed by and agreed that council go ahead and purchase a dog fouling sign for Pocket Park. They also needed to e-mail Carmarthenshire County Council dog warden to arrange a visit.
Wind turbines, Ciffig: A petition had been instigated for signature by the local community. The clerk was requested to e-mail County Clr. Mrs. Allen requesting that she represented the view of the town council and the electorate. The clerk was also requested to write to Carmarthenshire County Council asking why no public meeting had been organised by them.
A vote was taken regarding Clr. T. R. J. Jenkins MBE's comments being removed from previous minutes. It was unanimously agreed to keep the matter in the minutes.
COUNTY COUNCILLOR'S REPORT
The following matters were discussed: redundant dairy site - lengthy discussion was held regarding this site; primary school - alternative funding available and optional site discussed; Llysycroft - work here had now been completed; Farmers Arms site - advertising was now taking place for tenants and a meeting was to be arranged with the site owner; Velfrey Road - drainage work had been completed by Pembs. CC; Kings Court - ongoing; Station building - asbestos removed; car parking - looking at south side of railway; Bryngwenllian playground - structural work completed, but needed general tidying up; St. David's Avenue - renovation work due summer 2009; library - to be computerised; Whitland website - volunteers needed to update.
Outstanding items: traffic calming Spring Gardens/ North Road; town crossing - it was agreed that council accept the fire brigade's recommendation for a raised tarmac hump; lines in Taf car park; signs for car parking; lines for parking bays.
County Clr. Mrs. Allen referred to differences of views expressed at meetings. It was recognised that Mrs. Allen had not been granted sufficient time to speak. Thus, she was invited to take the floor to explain her line of reasoning and to make any comments.
Following on from any vote, Clr. Mrs. Allen was asked if she had anything further to add to comments already made and she said no. The chair, Clr. Miss R. Morrison, stated that council hoped the events of the night would not cast a dark cloud/pall over any future meetings and hoped they could draw a line under the events discussed.
Clr. Mrs. Allen agreed and she was thanked for her input.
CORRESPONDENCE
A letter was received from Nerys Evans congratulating the Mayor and Deputy Mayor on their appointment. Also asking for a meeting with the town council. The clerk was to contact Ms. Evans advising her of future meetings.
A letter was received from Hannah Thomas requesting a donation to cover costs of representing Wales at bowls in the Home International series. It was agreed that a donation of £100 should be made.
PLANNING APPLICATIONS
Derlwyn, Spring Gardens, Whitland - replacement of existing flat roof with new pitch roof (approved); Newark, Spring Gardens, Whitland - construction of new dwelling (approved).
Other matters discussed included:
Trees outside NatWest Bank and the kebab shop - These needed to be pruned and the clerk was asked to contact relevant persons for cost to complete this work.
Display cabinet, Pocket Park - Members were advised that the cabinet was in need of refurbishment. The clerk was asked to contact the contractor regarding this work.
The next general meeting of Whitland Town Council will be held on Monday, September 7, at 7 pm. This will take place in the Mayor's Parlour.
