Whitland Youth retained the Natwest Bank Pembrokeshire Cup at Crymych RFC on Bank Holiday Monday with a workmanlike performance, defending well against the strong wind in the first half and then changing up the gears in the second half to ease to victory by 34 points to eight, scoring five tries in the process.
Cardigan could only muster a penalty after 20 mintues in the first half from outside-half Jack Lewis and then Whitland scored their first try after 31 minutes when number eight and captain Micky Jones picked up from the base of a scrum 10 metres out and scrum-half Dafydd Evans showed great strength to get the touch down; this went unconverted.
On the stroke of half-time, after a quick tap penalty by Dafydd Evans, outside-half Jonathan Thomas put man-of-the-match flanker James Davies into the gap to score under the posts, with fullback James Stephenson converting to leave the score 12 points to three at the break.
Stephenson increased the lead with a penalty within three minutes of the restart after Cardigan's second row, Kierin Hurlry, had been yellow-carded for taking winger Dafydd Williams out off the ball.
Whitland's all round dominance then showed as they ran in three tries in the 10th, 15th and 20th minutes by prop Brynley Toms, flanker James Davies and second row Carl Smith, with James Stephenson converting the first two.
Cardigan did get a consolation try by second row Dan Jay, which went unconverted to leave the final score 34 points to eight to the young guns from Whitland.
This match also doubled up as a league game which meant Whitland, still undefeated in Pembrokeshire, won the league title, as well as completing the league and cup double for the past three years. Well done lads, you can be very proud of your record, as everyone at the club is of you.
Match referee was Mr. Chris Williams, assisted by Andrew Thomas and David Byrne.

Corus 26 pts. Whitland 1st XV 25
Whitland travelled to Corus for their last away fixture in the Swalec League Division One West and, although scoring four tries to three, lost by 26 points to 25.
Whitland took the lead after four minutes after a break by Lee Glanville, who was supported well by Jonathan Thomas and prop Craig Kelly, who went over for a try.
Thomas shaved the post with the conversion attempt, but increased Whitland's lead with a penalty after 10 minutes.
Corus replied with an unconverted try by winger Chris Hopper after 16 minutes, but the Borderers again increased their advantage after 22 minutes with backs Thomas and Glanville combining well to put winger Christiaan Roets over for their scecond try, which Thomas converted.
Two penalties by fullback Rhys Williams for Corus cut the deficit to 15-11, with Thomas hitting the crossbar with a late penalty chance for Whitland.
Corus scored within four minutes of the restart when Chris Hopper went over for his second and Williams converted and he added a penalty some six mintues later to increase their lead to 19 points to 15.
Centre L:ee Glanville was yellow-carded, but with Ryan Michael moving out into the centre, he charged down a clearing kick to score Whitland's third try, Thomas hitting the post with conversion.
Whitland incresed their lead midway through the half when Thomas kicked through for winger Aled Jones to chase and when the cover defence made a hash of it, Jones kicked on and got the touch down, but Thomas failed to convert.
Referee Gareth Saunders then yellow-carded flanker Celt Thomas for taking the man in the air at a lineout, but this seemed very harsh, and then with Whitland's scrum under pressure in front of the posts, the ball shot out, but scrum-half Gareth Davies appeared to touch it down, only for Chris McDonald, following up, to do the same and be awarded a try. Williams converted to give the lead back to the home side.
With time running out, Whitland were awarded a late penalty and kicked for the corner. A great lineout saw the forwards drive in field and just as scrum-half Gareth Davies was going to pick up he was hauled into the ruck.
It appeared to be a clear penalty, but no, the referee blew up for full-time and so Whitland were denied a victory, but gained two bonus points.
Centres Lee Glanville and Gary Evans had big games and young outside-half Jonathan Thomas contined his good run. Up front, the back row of Celt Thomas, Ryan Michael and skipper Randall Williams were again outstanding and the front five were solid.

Whitland 1st XV 15 pts. Bonymaen 15
Whitland's final match in Swalec League Division One West ended in a draw, 15 points, each after Bonymaen scored a late try deep in injury time and converted to level the scores.
Whitland led at half-time by nine points to three, all penalties kicked by outside-half Carwyn Jones and his opposite number Ian Brooks getting one for Bonymaen.
Jones added to his total, kicking his fourth penalty after 20 mintues of the second half and then in the 38th minute it appeared to be game over, with Whitland leading 15 points to three.
But no one told Bonymaen or the referee and after 39 minutes winger Robbie Ford touched down for what seemed a consolation try, but then the referee's watched stopped and after 10 minutes of injury time, number eight Duane Eager got his side's second try and outside-half Ian Brooks levelled the score with the conversion.
