Residents in Whitland have voiced strong objections to an application to site two large wind turbines near to the town.
At a public meeting held last Thursday at the Town Hall, over 80 people discussed the proposals by agents Caminus Energy Consultancy (on behalf of local organic farmer Nigel Short) to build two 105-metre wind turbines at Ciffig, on high ground to the south of Whitland.
The meeting, organised by campaign group Whitland Against Ffynnoncyll Turbines (WAFT), also saw the town's Mayor, Clr. Diane Evans, in attendance, as well as the applicant Mr. Short, who was given a chance to address those present.
However, residents made their concerns clear at the meeting about the scale of the turbines, said to be the largest in Europe, and how their large structure would have an enormous visible impact on the surroundings of the town.
The town council had already objected to the application at a recent meeting, on the grounds of environmental issues, and have voiced concerns about a possible danger to low flying aircrafts using the area.
The application is due to be heard by Carmarthenshire County Council in the next few weeks, while WAFT are planning to hold a further public meeting on the matter.
When asked for a comment, Mayor of Whitland, Clr. Mrs. Diane Evans, said: "Whitland Town Council is against the siting of the wind turbines at Hazlewell Farm. It was felt that it was too close to neighbouring homes and the town.
"It would have a detrimental enviromental impact to the surrounding area, and the quality of life of the local residents will be greatly comprimised.
"These wind turbines will be visible from Tenby, so you can imagine how big they will tower over the town.
"We are not against wind turbines when they are located in a place where they will not reduce the quality of life of neighbouring residents."
