Carew 122-4 and 115-4
lost to
Whitland 110-8 and 128-3
(by seven wickets)
Whitland's young cricketers showed they have resilience as well as talent as they overcame a first innings deficit to secure their sixth successive Ormond Youth title.
In achieving this memorable feat, they not only had to come from behind to win, they also had to recover from being three wickets down in their first innings with just 12 runs on the board as Carew pace bowler Stefan Davies ripped through the top order to finish with 4-21, including a hat-trick.
That came after Carew batted first and amassed 122-4 thanks mainly to Tom Davies, who powered his way to 80 with six huge sixes and two sweetly-timed fours. Other than him, the only other player with a score of note was Dom Hicks, who finished the first innings with 11 not out.
For Whitland, Scott Newton was the best bowler, taking 2-29.
In reply, Whitland just collapsed as Davies's left-armers proved too much. The only batsman to stand his ground was Matthew Webb, who kept calm to score 36, before Tom Davies bowled him. Nico Setaro also kept his nerve to score 22, but that first innings belonged to Stefan Davies, who showed he is definitely one for the future as Whitland were restricted to 110-8, a deficit of 12 runs.
A second wicket partnership of 83 between Tom Davies and his namesake Stefan resulted in a score of 115-4 in Carew's second dig. Tom scored 49 not out, with Stefan showing his all-round credentials to score 47.
The score was slightly below par and it didn't help that they only managed 13 runs from the final three overs of the innings as Scott Newton once again finished with a brace.
There was no major collapse second time around, but Whitland did stumble to 3-2 at one stage, with Webb falling for a second innings golden duck, but an unbroken third wicket partnership of 102 by Nathan Evans, who scored 39 not out, and Aled Davies, with 46, eased them past the total, helped in no small part to Carew's profligacy with the ball; they bowled a total of 34 wides in the game.
Stefan Davies, was named man of the match, but it was Whitland who had the last laugh as Newton raised the cup.
