During May, Whitland Male Voice Choir were delighted to have the privilege of singing in some glorious acoustics once again.

On May 16 they sang for a very responsive audience at the church in Ludchurch. The parishioners have spent a large amount of money on new lighting for the buildings and the choir members were very keen to help recoup some of this money for them.

The church was full and the happily sang well for their supper. As usual, they chose a wide variety of music, ranging from the lively 'Alexander's Ragtime Band' and 'Everytime I feel the Spirit' to the lyrical melodies of 'Timeless Moments' and 'Diolch I'r Ior.' The solo part was wonderfully performed by Hubert, the vice-chairman.

Soloists for the evening were Vernon from the bottom bass section and Peter from the top tenor section.

The choir's second concert was at St. Joh's Church in Tenby and was in aid of church funds. Again, the acoustics for singing were wonderful and, although there was only a small audience, they were very encouraging and 'smiley.'

Prior to the start of the concert, Juliet, the conductor, chatted to the audience and she discovered that there were two men who were members of male voice choirs in their home towns in England. She also learned that they were both about to achieve a life-long ambition of hearing a Welsh male choir singing 'live.'

As a result, she hastily altered the programme to include many Welsh favourites such as 'Myfanwy,' 'Calon Lan,' 'Men of Harlech' and 'We'll keep a Welcome.' Such is the adaptability of Whitland Choir.

The accompanist for both concerts was Hefina Wyn-Jones who, as always, captured the mood perfectly on the piano that Juliet wanted to convey to the audiences.

Secretary, Stan Phillips still has a few tickets left for next year's Royal Albert Hall concert in October, when the Association of Male Voice Choirs celebrate their 41st concert with a massed choir of some 900 voices taken from the choirs of North and South Wales. This is always a wonderful event which makes everyone proud to be Welsh. Anyone interested, please contact Stan on 01994 240053.

Whitland's next concert is on Tuesday, July 1, at St. Andrew's Church in Narberth, when their guests will be the gentlemen and ladies of Pembroke Male Voice Choir. The proceeds of this concert will all be presented to KRUF - the Kidney Research Unit of Wales, based in Cardiff. This charity has raised a staggering £23 million from the people of Wales in the last 30 years, and all money raised in the principality remains in Wales.

Tickets are on sale from Stan or any Whitland Choir member or from Phil Lloyd, secretary of Pembroke Male Voice Choir. They are only £3 and the concert begins at 7.30 pm.

Please support these two choirs who constantly give of their time and their talent freely for so many worthy causes in West Wales.
