Saturday, April 26, Whitland men visited Llandysul for a pre-season friendly.

Colin Wynn's rink of brothers Louis and Liam, playing half a game each, Huw 'Bean' Nicholas, and Morlais went down by 15 shots.

Steven Reese's rink of Doug Morgan/John Hammond, also sharing the game, Selwyn Price and Chris Court, just lost by one shot on the last end.

On rink four, the Whitland foursome of Nigel Davies, John Rees, Arthur Collinge and Peter Wills took an early lead, and kept hold of it to end of their game, 20-10.

On the next rink, Matthew James, Malcolm Holding, Roy Mitchell and Glyndwr Thomas also won by four shots.

It was a very close game, played in a true friendly spirit, with the home side winning by two shots.

TENBY 107

WHITLAND 65

On Saturday, Whitland travelled to the seaside for their first league game of the 2003 season, against Tenby. Unfortunately, it was not bucket and spade weather and more like umbrella and wellies. With the wind gusting around the green, Pat Currie did a good impression of Mary Poppins as he fought with his brolly.

After breaking the land speed record to get to the match on time, Colin Wynn might have wished he'd stayed in work as his rink went down 32-15 to Paul Diment.

Peter Wills' foursome had a close game with Mal Bishop, but just failed to keep the momentum going and ended the game 13 shots down.

It was a similar story on Glyndwr Thomas's rink. Both sides picked up a count of six before tea, but it was Andrew Muskett's crew that came out on top, ending the match 23-15.

Steve Reese seemed well in command of his game, stopping at the tenth 13-5 up. But whatever was put in their tea certainly worked, and they only managed to pick up six shots in the second half compared to Pat's 18.

Rink scores (Whitland first, Tenby skips only):

Huw Nicholas, Malcolm Holding, Denny Richards, Colin Wynn 15; Paul Diment 32.

Nigel Davies, Arthur Collinge, John Rees, Peter Wills 16; Mal Bishop 29.

Matthew James, Richard Green, Roy Mitchell, Glyndwr Thomas 15; Andrew Musket 23.

Selwyn Price, David Jenner, Chris Court, Steven Reese 19; Pat Currie 23.

FIVE ARCHES LADIES 33.25

WHITLAND LADIES 38

The ladies also played their first league game on Saturday down in Tenby. With a strong performance up front from Kathy Jenner, Andrea Thomas's rink took an early lead. But as the home side got to grips with the pace of their green, they soon levelled the score. And this is how the game went on until the last end, when the Whitland girls held a three-shot lead, and making sure all woods were covered, they only dropped the one shot, ending the match two shots up over Ceris Hewlings.

On rink six, the Whitland foursome steamed ahead of a depleted Five Arches side. But, as usual, things never go as you expect in bowls, and Vera Williams's side knuckled down to some steady bowling and ended the game two shots up. This should have been enough to end the match as a draw, but because the Arches were one player short, they had to lose a quarter of their score.

Rink scores (Whitland first, Five Arches skips only):

Kathy Jenner, Sandra Fiddy, Cally Jones, Andrea Thomas 21; Cerys Hewlings 19.

Shirley Hammond, Jo Shewry, Dianne Scourfield, Josie Wills 17; Vera Williams 14 1/4

WHITLAND BORDERERS 77

ST. BRIDES 82

On Sunday, the Borderers were in action. Captain David Jenner must have thought his team was going to notch up their first win of the season, as only trailing by four shots at tea it was anyone's game. And as the 21st end neared, the things were looking favourable for the home side. But the experience of St. Brides came through at the end as they held on to a five- shot win.

Rink scores (Borderers first, St. Brides skips only):

Matthew James, Liam Price, Philip Wynn, John Hammond 28; M. Brewer 11.

Louis Price, John Addison, Daniel Jenner, David Davies 13; G. Phillips 23.

Richard Green, James Jenner, Peter Wills, David Jenner 19; L Davies 24.

Chris Court, Jonathan Seeley, Doug Morgan, Brian Griffiths 17; T. Shaw 24.

MEMBER AND

NOVICE DAY

Bank Holiday Monday we held our annual Member and Novice Day.

This was set up a few years ago to introduce people to the game of bowls. Each member has to bring along a novice, and after a quick lesson on which way to point the small dot etc., the competition begins.

Thanks must go to our club captain and competition secretary, Steve Reese, who organised the tournament, which ran without a hitch.

Losing semi-finalists were Cally Jones and Nathan Price and Liam Price and his mum Jane. The final was played over nine ends, with Marc Jones and Nick Price triumphing over Andrea Thomas and Emyr James.

Chairman Peter Wills presented the trophies.

A big thank you must go to Kathy for running the bar and supplying the hungry competitors with sausages and chips, and to HI-LINE Trophies for sponsoring the event this year.

SPEEDY RECOVERY

All the members would like to wish Nick Price a speedy recovery, and look forward to seeing you on the green again in the near future.
