Sir,

As a Begelly born and bred boy, I, in my 20s, found I had to move to to London to pursue my quest as a cartographer. No issue there, but nice to return to Pembrokeshire when I can, now in my 40s.

Having missed the last bus to Tenby on a Tuesday night at 8 pm, imagine my smile at the quote of £17 in a taxi from Begelly to Tenby town. I'm not moaning that's £3.40 a mile, well good. London prices back home, cool.

What I personally object to is the lack of service after midnight. I phoned 118118 and spoke to many people in the Philippines who told me the nearest available taxi was in Pembroke Dock. So, unperturbed by that, I used a local phone box, using £4, only to be told that I should phone another number!

It's summer, I thought, July, our main season, not one of our local taxi numbers answered. I phoned seven different taxi numbers that were either answer machine or that lovely uurrrrrrrgh noise.

I know this place, I thought, there is always someone wanting to earn some money! No, not last night, Tuesday July 7, a night off for the seven local cab companies I phoned. It's not me, really; I walked home from Saundersfoot, in the footsteps of my grandparents in the 1890s. So what, if it took one hour?

My point, on the holidaymaker side off things, is that the unavailability of such a common service is ridiculous. Do we, as Pembrokeshire people, not care about how people view this place?

I will probably walk everywhere after this, but come on boys and girls. A service industry is based on providing a service, which after midnight, as Steve Miller used to say, is not available. Just be honest and say as much! All home by 12, otherwise walk!

Gavin Thomas,

Sore feet,

London.
