As we were going to press yesterday (Thursday), it was claimed that a nationwide superstore was moving into Narberth.
However, both Pembrokeshire County Council and company involved have denied any knowledge of the matter.
The claims came in a statement from County Councillor Wynne Evans, of Narberth, who stated that after much speculation over the last few months, with a number of major high street retailers looking at the former Brains Brewery site in the town, a pre-planning application was now with Pembrokeshire County Council's planning department.
"I have had to hold back on the release of this information while a number of other players were still in the frame," said Clr. Evans in the statement which we received in the post.
"The Co-op Group intend to build a superstore on the site, one of the largest in West Wales, incorporating a number of subsidiary in-store outlets."
Clr. Evans also said that he had received assurances that up to 38-full-time and 30 part-time jobs would be created.
"This is a major employment boost that will be welcomed by all," Clr. Evans continued.
"The Co-op are renowned for using many local suppliers that they source in the region so again a huge boost for local produce providers.
"Another positive is the store will provide around 40 two-hour parking spaces, allowing shoppers to use the store, then go to the main shopping areas of the town for other requirements.
"This will take immense parking pressure off on-street parking that has been a great concern to many locals."
In his statement, Clr. Evans added that he was hopeful of announcing another huge employment boost for the town in February.
"Discussions for that are at a very delicate stage," he said.
However, when we contacted County Hall, we were told that the planning department had not received any such applications.
Furthermore, a spokeswoman for The Co-operative Group said: "We are always looking at opportunities to grow our business, however we have no agreements in place to purchase a property in Narberth."
We tried to contact Clr. Evans to clarify the matter, but were unable to get hold of him.
