Sir,
I have written before about the demise of our De Valence Pavilion. I personally have no problem with the aquarium expanding and moving to the town centre; I think it would be great for holidaymakers and locals alike to have such an unusual attraction and I wish them good luck in their venture.
Regarding 'Wetherspoons', I think it should be kept out at all cost. We already have plenty of pubs and eating houses. We do not need another one! And what will Wetherspoons do for us? They won't care about our town and our residents; they will only be concerned with making a profit. We have the expertise amongst ourselves, to fill such a gap, if it were needed, and I don't think it is needed.
This, and all other problems surrounding what the De Valence should be used for, do not solve the major problem of what will replace the venue, should it disappear. We need a venue for drama, amateur performances, shows, exhibitions, dances, dance classes, bands etc. etc. Is anyone else committed to this idea?
We also need a cinema! The Playhouse used to be used for Gang Shows and the like; it could be again. As my sister-in-law pointed out to me, when you go to the 'pictures', you want to feel a sense of occasion or else you might as well stay at home and watch a DVD.
The new cinema in Carmarthen is alright, but it is a very long way to go and the cinema itself is like any other cinema in the country. Why should Carmarthen have our business anyway, we need our business here. We have a cinema with history, it needs tender loving care to bring it back to its former glory.
This has been done very successfully in other places. I have recently visited Clevedon's Curzon cinema in Somerset and one in Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, both of which are lovely old cinemas brought to life by sensitive renovation and people who are about providing quality service with the homogenisation of all our buildings in the High Street.
I believe we need a promise that we will have a cinema and the equivalent of the De Valence, both within our town centre, with easy access (let's not mention the parking situation which threatens to make our town centre a no go area) for everyone who lives both in Tenby and the surrounding districts.
If we do not provide these facilities for our locals, what will they do for entertainment, sit in Wetherspoons? What a dreadful thought! We have what we need here already. Why, oh why, can't we invest in their future, for us.
Jane Flavin,
