Sir,
Upon reading the letter from 'Unhappy Narberth resident (name and address supplied) in last week's Observer, I felt I simply had to reply to his/her comments.
'Ironman Wales' coming to Narberth was fun, exciting and a tremendous boost to our town. As Narberth residents, we were informed several weeks in advance of the forthcoming event and necessary road closures (with fliers through our letterboxes, signs around the town, and regular reminders from the local radio and press), providing anyone who didn't wish to be around on that day with ample opportunity to make alternative arrangements.
I can't honestly believe that this person's enjoyment of the Wales match on TV was seriously marred by the noise of 'Ironman' supporters outside 'with their bells and inflatables!' - a rugby match is noisy enough anyway and the TV volume could have been turned up if required.
But what annoyed me more - and prompted me to respond - was their comment that they were trying to remember the 9/11 tragedy and feel sympathy for its victims (as it was also the 10th anniversary of the atrocity), yet found this difficult because of the noise from 'Ironman!'
What nonsense! The events of 9/11 were devastating and should never be forgotten, but if the rest of the world puts its lives on hold and sits in quiet contemplation, on the anniversary or on any other day, then surely the terrorists have won! Live and let live, 'Unhappy.' After all, it's nobody's fault when dates clash. We can remember and sympathise, yet still enjoy our lives. And if you felt that strongly about remembering 9/11, perhaps you shouldn't have been watching the Wales match anyway!
Annie Turner
(extremely happy
Narberth resident),
