Saundersfoot Wombles were in the spotlight recently at the Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services (PAVS) awards held in Narberth, where they received a Highly Commended in the Open Award category.

The accolade was accepted on behalf of the group by volunteers Maureen Bartlett and Sam Turner - who also serves as Saundersfoot Community Council manager.

A spokesperson for Saundersfoot Community Council said: “The award highlights the Wombles’ continued hard work and dedication in keeping the village looking clean, welcoming, and vibrant.

“Their efforts throughout the year have made a real difference to residents and visitors alike.

“Congratulations to all the winners on the night — and to every volunteer who contributes their time and energy to improving our communities. Saundersfoot is proud of you all.”

County councillor for the seaside village’s south ward, Cllr Chris Williams praised the group for their contribution to the community.

“The award highlights the Wombles’ continued hard work and dedication in helping to keep the village looking clean and welcoming throughout the year, and we are all delighted!” he said.

Lately the Wombles have been busy preparing and planting up troughs with spring bulbs at the Methodist Church; litter picking around the village picking up 31kg in November alone; went on a beach clean with Ecoast and Saundersfoot Rotary picking up over 25kg of plastic and rope; and working with Saundersfoot Social to make festive decorations from fabric scraps - ‘making good use of the things that we find, things that the everyday folks leave behind.’

The Wombles have also had donations of Christmas decorations and trees that people no longer want - some of which have been used to decorate Saundersfoot Library, some have been shared with library customers, while others will be used for St Mary's, Begelly - Christmas Tree Festival starting on December 12th
