Sir, Once more the pages of our local newspapers have our AMs, town and county councillors calling for affordable housing to be built in our county.

Whilst I commend all concerned for their efforts on this matter, I'm puzzled. With all that's currently happening to the housing market, why is the cry for affordable housing when people cannot afford what is currently on the market place, whether it be new build or not.

If our AMs and councillors mean affordable as in some form of council housing scheme, then come straight out with it and say so.

If they mean 'affordable' to purchase a house, the current state of the housing market is dire; it's dying a slow, agonising death, with thousands already laid off work and mortgages becoming harder to obtain, while new build homes on many sites remain unsold or only a few selling. Who can afford to buy? Add to this mix the high cost of building plots, high material and labour costs, and how can an 'affordable' house be built? Please all concerned, come clean and state exactly what you mean when you next talk of 'affordable housing'.

I. L. Williams, Flat 15a, Narberth.
