It was a day with a difference when the Welsh folk duo Ric-a-do arrived at Tavernspite to spend a day teaching Welsh folk songs to pupils and staff.

Ric-a-do, who are Roland Emmanuel, of Gowerton, and Mansel Kedward from North Pembrokeshire, gave a short recital of songs to begin the day, ably accompanying themselves on guitar, mandolin and guitar.

The duo then worked with each class, teaching new songs and, most importantly, discussed many aspects of the songs.

In this way, every class learned about Welsh language, music and culture and found themselves developing their thinking skills in topics as diverse as history and numeracy.

The children quickly learned their songs and the school day finished on a high note with a grand concert. Each class sang and talked about the stories behind the songs they had learned. Even the very youngest gave a rendition. It ended with Ric-a-do performing with the children, exhorting them to 'raise the roof'. They certainly did!

"This Welsh folk music workshop day was a special experience for the children. They learned so much about the Welsh culture and language in one day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves," said headteacher Kevin Phelps.

Year 3 pupil Megan Edwards said: "I really enjoyed singing the Welsh songs and it was very exciting performing on the stage to the whole school at the end of the day."
