An outstanding entry of 1,500 lambs forward at Whitland Mart last Tuesday sold to a very brisk trade with the medium lambs averaging of 162.55ppk (£68.84/head). Lambs sold to a maximum of 181ppk from John, Pantyderi Farm, Whitland, and £77/head from Austin, Burry Dairy Farm, Gower, with the overall market average at 158.73ppk.
Non-approved lambs sold to a top of £47 whilst selling to an average of £39.
An improved entry ofjust over 200 ewes and rams forward continued to meet a fast trade with the heavier type ewes being in good demand; subsequently selling to an average of £51 whilst the lighter ewes averaged £23. Ewes sold to a top price of £70 from Windsor, Fforest Farm, Whitland. Rams sold to a top of £68 from Brown, New Bungalow.
A small entry of fat cattle forward saw heifers and steers averaging 133.50ppk and 138.84ppk respectively - top prices were achieved in both categories by Reynolds, Pentroydin. The top price p/kg for other cattle was 146p for a 630 kilo Limousin steer from Brodie, Yerbeston Mountain.
Twenty-two barren cows forward peaked at 133ppk for a 615 kilo Belgian Blue from Hughes, The Dingle.
Special Mart
There was a reduced entry of 57 cull cows and clean fat cattle forward at the special monthly mart at Whitland last Wednesday for a combination of stock from herds that are subject to movement restrictions.
All types were again in good demand whilst the well-fleshed and finished cattle met a particularly fast trade.
Considering all the 54 cows forward were of dairy breeds it was certainly an excellent trade with cows selling to an average price p/kg of 92.36p or the equivalent of £591 per head. The top price per kilo of 111p was a 720 kilo Holstein Friesian and achieving the top price per head of £915 was an 860 kilo Holstein Friesian.
Overage heifers peaked at 131ppk for a 595 kilo Hereford and selling to the top price per head of £855 was a 780 kilo Brown Swiss from Thomas, Gellifelen. Overage steers made up to 137ppk (£920) for a 650 kilo Hereford from Phillips Bros, Cilhernin.
