An improved entry of almost 740 lambs forward at Whitland Mart on Tuesday, November 25, met a good trade with lambs selling to an average of 116.08ppk, which is in line with the national trends. The best lambs peaked at 125ppk for 40 kilos from Fairclough, Frowen, Login and a top price per head of £58 for 51 kilos from Wilson, Middle Pool, Pendine.
An entry of 210 good quality ewes were on offer with the greatest demand being for the heavier type which was reflected in an average of £44, while the lighter ewes sold to an average of £18. Ewes sold to a top price of £60 from Thomas and Son, Carswell Farm, St. Florence, and rams made up to £52 from Howells, Aelybryn, Llysonnen Road, Carmarthen.
Amongst the cattle entries were 25 barren cows selling to an average price per kilo of 75.89p or the equivalent of £477 per head. Top price per kilo included 128p for a 695 kilo Limousin from Reynolds, Pentroydin, Llanddewi Velfrey, which made the top price of £890.
Overage steers levelled at 116.73ppk, while heifers selling to an average of 109.58ppk; Top price per head included £830 for a 720 kilo Belgian Blue steer from James, Cilhengroes, Whitland, and heifers sold to £695 for a 560 kilo Limousin from Harris and Son, Ffosddu Fach, Whitland.
Fat cattle sold to a top price per kilo of 134.50p for a 535 kilo Belgian Blue steer from Reynolds, Pentroydin, which realised the top price per head of £719 and a Belgian Blue heifer from the same vendor peaked at £636.
Calves sold to a top price of £70 for a Welsh Black heifer from Morgan, Clover Hill, Crundale, who also sold a Welsh Black bull for £44.
