There was again a good trade in lambs on Tuesday, September 23, at the weekly Whitland Mart resulting in an average price per kilo of 124.38p. Again, the greatest demand was for premium lambs, which was reflected in the top price per kilo of 135p for 38.5 kilos from Fairclough, Frowen, Login. Other leading prices included 133p for 45.50 kilos from Davies, Morfa Farm, Mathry, who also sold 42.50 kilos at 132p.

Lambs sold to a top price per head of £61.60 for 60 kilos from Bussell, St. Kennox Farm, Llawhaden.

A relatively small entry of 241cull ewes forward; selling to a very brisk trade with heavier ewes averaging £49.27 whilst the lighter ewes sold to £22.46. Again the greatest demand was for the heavier type ewe, which was reflected, in the top price of £62 from Davies, Tyllwyd, Dryslwyn. With other leading prices at £59 from Hughes, Whitlow Hill, Martletwy, and £58.50 from Evans, Llaethdy, Llangynnog.

Cull rams sold to a top price of £53 from Lloyd, Maesyglyn, Ffostrasol, who also sold at £47; with others selling to £42 and £30 from Vaughan, Llysyrawel, Tufton.

An entry of 22 barren cows realised an average price per kilo of 83.19p, which equates to £527.. Top price per head was £845 for a 860 kilo Friesian from Thompson, Ysguborwen, Login; with other leading prices at £750 for a 765 kilo Friesian from Fenni Farms, East Regwm, Whitland, who also sold a 740 kilo and 650 kilo Holstein Friesian at £700 and £620. Overage steers sold to a top of £1,065 for a 855 kilo Simmental from Evans, Coed Howell, Cwmfelin Boeth, and heifers peaked at £840 for a 600 kilo Limousin from Morgan, Upper Bletherston, Clarbeston Road.

The fat cattle trade remained buoyant with heifers averaging 141.47p, whilst steers sold to 142.49. Top price per kilo was 151.50p for a 560 kilo Limousin heifer from Saer, Rhosgoch, Red Roses, which equated to the top price per head of £848.

In the calf ring, bulls calves sold to a top price of £200 for a Limousin from Jones, New House Farm, Lampeter Velfrey, with other leading bull calf prices at £180 for a Limousin from Reynolds, Sarland Farm, Laugharne. Heifers sold to a top price of £138 for a Limousin from Jones, New House Farm, Lampeter Velfrey, who also sold at £122.
