Aberystwyth Youth 8 pts. Narberth Youth 23
The combined effects of exams, injuries and work commitments led to Narberth sending an apparently weakened team on the long trip to Aberystwyth on Saturday. Expectations were not high after the midweek loss to Milford Haven in the Pembrokeshire Cup. To their credit however, despite the circumstances, the players produced an excellent performance, winning the match 23 points to eight. A tight first half saw the young Otters turn around 6-3 ahead thanks to two penalties from outside- half Tom Richards. In the second half, however, with more control of possession, Narberth were able to deploy their open and exciting game to better effect. Centre Rory Bennett skilfully created space for those around him and flanker Rion Whatmore, snaffling every bit of loose ball, epitomised the performance. Eventually the pressure told, resulting in two tries from fullback and captain Gethin Salter. The highlight, however, was a superb solo effort by right wing Kevin Simmons who, after beating his opponent on the outside, set off on a touchline hugging run, just oustripping the cover defence to score in the right corner. Gethin Salter converted one of the Narberth tries and Aber scored an unconverted try just before the final whistle.
