The owners of one of the UK’s quirkiest Airbnb sites in Pembrokeshire - where people can stay in a UFO - say passers-by keep knocking their door to ask what the mysterious object in their field is!

Martin Johnson and his wife Carol Anne who run Melin Mabes in Templeton near Narberth wanted to create something unique.

They found a building shell advertised on eBay for £3k - originally built for the London Olympics as a temporary structure to hide generators.

Mr Johnson thought it was an unusual shaped building and decided to buy it for his UFO plan.

After six months of work, the Spodnic UFO glamping pod with private hot tub was ready to be used and surprise sci-fi enthusiasts.

Since opening to the public they have had visitors from all across the world spending holidays in the flying saucer.

Mr Johnson added that he has had passers-by knocking on their doors and asking what the odd-shaped building was doing in their field.

He said: "This time of the year you get glimpses of the road and you can see it and we’ve had people knocking on our doors and asking what it is in our field.

"Electricians were also once checking their power lines on their helicopter flying right next to it and taking photographs of it and thinking what that is.

The UFO was built in 2017 and has since gained global interest - having been featured at George Clarke's Amazing Spaces.

Before starting building the quirky pod, Mr Johnson said they had a total budget of £7,5k.

With him being a self-called craftsman and a fan of Star Wars, he was inspired on the idea of the future in the 50s to build it.

He explained: "The actual initial shell was built for the London Olympics as a temporary structure to hide generators and they built eight which were located in different places around the Olympics.

"It was advertised on eBay and thought it was an unusual shape building.

"We were looking for something different. The glamping market is quite large and there are all sorts of different things out there."

To add to its originality, even an hydraulic operation door and an observation roof were added to the pod.

"Inside there are computer components and it looks like an electronic controlling of the space ship,” he continued

"Then we have got led lighting which gives really nice effects and the beds are made out of tubular scaffold pipes."

And people from all over the world including China and USA have booked a stay at this Airbnb - especially sci-fi enthusiasts.

Mr Johnson said they were looking to build something unique where people could enjoy the "peace and quiet" of their area - rather than a standard cabinet.

Apart from the UFO pod, they also have built a tree house and a gypsy caravan.

He added: "I also built a replica of Doctor Who Tardis as a toilet. I made a sound effect when he flushes the loo when the Tardis takes off!”
