Police are warning mobile 'phone owners to be extra vigilant with their 'phone security following a number of thefts recently.

This is a problem both locally and nationally where thousands of mobile 'phones are being stolen every month; young people being especially vulnerable. By taking a few simple steps you can reduce your risk of becoming a victim of mobile 'phone theft.

The police advise that mobile 'phone owners should:

• Security mark the 'phone with your postcode and house number.

• Register your 'phone with the operator - this will enable them to bar the 'phone if stolen.

• Avoid displaying your 'phone in public. Always remain aware of your surroundings when using your 'phone.

• Keep your 'phone out of sight at home, particularly away from windows and doors.

• Make a note of the IMEI number of the 'phone and report it to the police if the 'phone is stolen. The IMEI number is a unique 15-digit serial number which can be accessed by keying *#06# into most 'phones; or looking behind the battery of your 'phone.
