Large wastebins that sit next to Tenby's historic town walls are spoiling the attraction of the iconic area, in the view of one local councillor.
Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas said that she would like to see Pembrokeshire County Council's streetcare department do something about the huge bins that are situated in front of the walls.
"Tenby's town walls are iconic and they need to be protected," said Clr. Mrs. Thomas at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council.
Her colleague, Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter, also said that she would like to see a stop put to those who leave cardboard boxes outside their properties in the town from an early evening.
"It looks dreadful and unsightly. They are put out so early in the evening that it spoils the town and the cardboard is often blown up the street too," she remarked.
It was Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown's understanding that the cardboard was collected by a private firm and that anyone who had refuse bins along the South Parade was supposed to keep them on their own yards.
The town clerk said he had contacted the county council's streetcare manager, Mr. Marc Owen, over the matter of the bins, and he had said that it was an issue that was inter-connected with other ongoing matters in the town, such as street trading and A frames obstructing the streets, and that they couldn't deal with one without dealing with the other.
Clr. Lawrence Blackhall felt that this stance was an excuse for doing nothing.
"The issue of the bins is a simple one that can be looked at on it's own. I still don't understand why a refuse wagon can't come around and do a collection at around 6 pm, even if it's just for 10 weeks of the holiday season. It beggars belief," said Clr. Blackhall, adding that he thought it would be a good idea for Mr. Owen to meet with councillors at a future meeting.
