A keen countryside walker, who was found dead in a local farm field, may have been trampled by cows, an inquest concluded yesterday (Thursday). Fifty-five-year-old Wendy Tustin, of 29 Flemish Close, St. Florence, was found on the private grounds of East Tarr Farm in the village by the farm's owner on September 21 of last year. Before her death, Mrs. Tustin, who worked as a cook at the village school, passed another local farmer as she headed home from her walk with her Collie dog. Farmer Mr. David Brian Thomas told Pembrokeshire coroner Mr. Michael Howells how he had a brief conversation with Mrs. Tustin whilst he was out harvesting potatoes "After saying hello, she told me she was heading home after a long walk, and back down the lane and across the field," he explained. The owner of the field where Mrs. Tustin was found, returned home after making a trip out to post some letters, to find a 'commotion' in one of her fields and a dog in the farmyard without an owner, looking 'slightly distressed'. "After putting the dog in the stable, I looked around for its owner, but there didn't appear to be anyone about; then I noticed a commotion in the field with the cattle making a noise and moving around," said land owner, Mrs. Heather Williams, who, after walking into the field to investigate, found an injured person on the ground. Mrs. Williams quickly called the emergency services, while her daughter drove the cattle out of the field. The two ladies also received instructions from the ambulance service as what to do with the injured person while they waited for assistance. Coroner Mr. Howells read out the pathologis's report into Mrs. Tustin's death, which stated she had endured blunt force trauma to her chest which included lacerations to the heart and right pulmonary artery. "It is clear that no blame can be attached to anyone over Mrs. Tustin's death, not the cattle nor their owners," said the coroner. "It is highly likely that she was jostled or trampled on by the cattle while walking in the field. Calves that are suckling, as these were, can often be unpredictable, but they had not caused any trouble in the past or since," added Mr. Howells, who concluded that Mrs. Tustin had sustained injuries by means unknown while walking amongst cattle on private property.
