Folly Farm, Begelly, is celebrating a special birthday, The Brooklyn Cakewalk is 100-years-old. This old tyme fairground machine continues to give great pleasure to thousand of visitors in Europe's largest indoor vintage fairground at Folly Farm. This beautiful nostalgic example of a cakewalk ride was originally built in 1907 by Thomas Walker, of Tewkesbury, based on a design for a cranked ride developed in America. To obtain maximum experience and thrill from this ride, revellers were encouraged to perform their own novelty walk along the walkway, and in days gone by, great performances were rewarded with the prize of a cake, hence the machine's name. So popular was the ride, special music was composed to complement the unique rhythmic motion of Latin American Dance. Chris Ebsworth, of Folly Farm, commented: "Our cake walk ride has undergone complete restoration, transforming it to its former glory by a large team of specialist craftsmen. And together with our resident maintenance team here at Folly Farm, visitors will enjoy many more years of fun."
