Wales’ First Minister and Mid and West Wales Labour Senedd Member, Eluned Morgan has launched a rapid-action taskforce to address the impact of nutrient pollution on housing developments in Pembrokeshire and across Wales.

With several local homes currently stalled due to nutrient rules, Morgan said the taskforce is a crucial step in ensuring families can access much-needed housing while safeguarding rivers, wildlife and the natural environment, which fall under the responsibility of Natural Resources Wales (NRW).

The taskforce brings together representatives from the Welsh Government and local authorities to deliver practical, effective solutions.

Its work will include:

• Partnering with NRW on fast, practical fixes.

• Reviewing how rules and guidance could be made clearer and more flexible.

• Providing direct support to councils and developers to help get building underway.

The taskforce is set to hold its first meeting next week - a step the First Minister said reflects the Government’s “urgency and transparency” in addressing the issue.

“This is about getting the balance right,” she said.

“We need to protect our unique environment, but we also need to make sure local people aren’t denied the homes they deserve.

”She emphasised that the taskforce forms part of a wider effort to support local communities and ensure housing projects progress in a sustainable way.”
