Local councillors have urged volunteers to ‘take the plunge’ and get in touch with Tenby Sea Cadets who have issued a plea for more help in managing the unit.
Correspondence from the Sea Cadets came before members of Tenby Town Council at their meeting on Tuesday night, stating that the organisation needed volunteers with practical business experience living in the local area to help with the management of the unit, taking on roles such as fundraising, organising events, and training the cadets.
“We need adults living in the Tenby area to share their professional skills and experience in the Sea Cadet unit to help the unit thrive in the local community,” wrote commanding officer, Lt (SCC) Roy Broxham RNR.
“We are an independent charity that relies on volunteers in the local community to help make a positive difference to the lives of so many young people in your area.
“We have supported hundreds of young people in the Tenby area to learn nautical skills, but we currently have 18 cadets and very few adult volunteers at the unit, but are looking for more.
“Tenby Sea Cadets offers an inspirational environment for young people aged 10 to 18 to challenge themselves and personally develop through nautical adventure based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy. This helps young people to build a sense of identity, positively impacting their life chances, from improved post-16 destinations in employment and training to see an increased participation in communities,” he added.
Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, said she hoped that the organisation would gain more support, as she knew hundreds of locals who had been through the Sea Cadets through the years.
“I’d welcome them to come to a future meeting to see if there’s anything we can do as a town council to help them gain more volunteers,” she told her fellow councillors.
