Sir,

The Imperial Japanese Army surrendered on August 15, 1945, after bitter fighting at Imphal and Kohima, led by General William Slim. Known to the men as Uncle Bill, he had out-thought the enemy's method of attack, which never varied, and led to their downfall.

Also in the thick of fighting was Major General T. W. Rees, renowned for Welsh hymn singing during lulls in battle.

After the surrender, there was a major task in liberating the Prisoner of War camps. The story 'If only we knew', of life in the camps, was written by local teacher Mr. Crighton Reynolds.

There were many who joined the TA and never thought they would end up in Burma. Although few in number now, the Pembrokeshire Burma Star Association are still active and parade their standard at ceremonies.
