Pembrokeshire County Council have asked local councillors for feedback on the recent Ironman Wales event held in Tenby and surrounding areas, in preparation for next year's competition.

In correspondence that came before members of the town council at their meeting on Tuesday night, the authority's street care manager, Marc Owen, wanted feedback in relation to issues such as - road closures, general traffic management, park and ride facilities, community impact, and public liaison.

Deputy Mayor, Clr. Paul Rapi, who chaired the meeting, said that he didn't hear about any problems from the event this year, with his colleague Clr. Mrs. Kerri Durham agreeing.

"I think the organisers have got it down to a fine art now," she said.

Clr. Lawrence Blackhall praised the work that Pembrokeshire County Council did to make everything run smoothly, in particular the street care team, who he said were there first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

Clr. Mrs. Trisha Putwain said that some people had queried with her as to how much money from the event was put back into Pembrokeshire, as competitors seemed to be paying a large fee to take part in the event, and as the Ironman organisers were making money from the event, was there a financial contribution made to the area?

Her colleague, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, said that she didn't think this was a question for the town council to ask, nor was it a question that warranted an answer.

"Look what the event has brought to the community, it's about Pembrokeshire working together to stage such a fantastic event," she said.

Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter said that it was vital for the town to hang on to the event as she knew that Cardiff was desperate to stage the Ironman Wales, while Clr. Blackhall said that he hoped the event could be kept in the town and county for the next 20 years.

"The event is supported by Welsh Government funding and it fills every guesthouse and hotel for miles around on the weekend it is held and creates a truly extraordinary atmosphere, so the Ironman organisers should be applauded for what it has brought to the area," remarked Clr. Blackhall.

"The feedback we have received from competitors is that Tenby forms one of the best Ironman courses in the world," added Clr. Trevor Hallett.
