A visit to picturesque Pembrokeshire and Tenby features in an episode of the new travel show where world-famous singer Michael Ball returns to his motherland for a warm ‘welcome in the hillsides’.

‘Wonderful Wales with Michael Ball’ started on Channel 5 this month, with the four-part series, following the host as he explores his own heritage whilst discovering more about this proud nations’ rich history, Celtic traditions and its hidden treasures.

With the dramatic backdrop of majestic mountains, vast valleys and breathtaking beaches, Michael strengthens his connection with this wonderful land of song.

The series sees Michael starting his journey above the river Tywi at the majestic Dinefwr castle, where he learns about Lord Rhys one of the forefathers of the arts culture in Wales, before heading for the coast.

Michael joins wildlife expert Lizzie Daly on a boat trip around Ramsey Island in search of the fastest bird in the world and some seal spotting, before putting his fishing skills to the test with a local angler in Newquay.

On the mainland he visits the colourful seaside town of Tenby, where myth and legend come to life through a local storyteller, and discovers more about our ancient ancestors ingenuity at Pentre Ifan burial chamber with Dr Iestyn Jones.

Renowned for its award-winning food Michael visits the Harbourmaster in Aberaeron to tackle a tricky dish – the souffle, before heading for Laugharne where he meets some special relations of the famous Welsh writer Dylan Thomas.

He learns more about the nation’s patron saint with Wales’ first female bishop in St David’s the smallest city in the UK before ending his trip at the coast, for a special performance with Llanddarog choir.

On what appealed about this Wonderful Wales series, Michael said: “Well, I know the Valleys and Cardiff, but I’ve never actually travelled around the rest of the country!

“That was one of the reasons I wanted to do this show and, gosh, it didn’t let me down. It’s just breathtaking! But it’s not just about the scenery, it’s also about the people - they’re just so welcoming.

“If I’m honest, I just wanted to get out of the house after lockdown! Seriously, it was lovely seeing family and friends, going back to the places I know and love, and discovering the rest of this incredible country. I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun! I laughed a lot, but it was very moving as well. I hope that by watching the series viewers will understand why I love Wales so much,” he added.

‘Wonderful Wales with Michael Ball’ continues on Channel 5 on Fridays, at 8 pm.
