The 22nd annual Primary School's Instrumental Music Festival was held at Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest, on Saturday.
Over 600 young musicians participated in this year's festival, which was organised by the Pembrokeshire County Council Music Service that was sponsored by Texaco.
During the morning concert, individual school ensembles were given the opportunity to perform to an enthusiastic audience of parents.
Mr. Tim Bourne compered the programme.
Nine schools presented a varied selection of music.
The schools that participated were as follows: Milford Junior School Big Band; Tenby Junior School Orchestra; Fenton CP School Ensemble St. Oswald's VA School Orchestra; Stackpole School Orchestra; St. Aidan's VA School Orchestra; Saundersfoot CP School Orchestra; Spittal VC School Orchestra; Roch School Orchestra.
During the afternoon, individual performers and ensemble groups participated in competitions for various categories.
The professional adjudicators who gave their valuable advice to the young performers were: Martin Ronchetti - woodwind; Dennis Mahoney - brass; Antoinette Metcalfe - strings; Carole Oakes - piano; Edward Burns - strings; David Powell - percussion.
These competitions provided the young musicians with a valuable experience of performing to a friendly audience of parents and friends.
At the evening concert the area orchestras and bands performed to a capacity audience. Mr. Tim Bourne presented the programme.
The area groups who performed were as follows: Pembroke Junior Schools Orchestra (conductor - Rebecca Whitehurst); Tenby Area Junior School Orchestra (conductor - Richard Tiller); Preseli Area String Orchestra (conductor -Marian Goodfellow); Tenby Area Junior Wind Ensemble (conductor - Judy Pyart); Haverfordwest Area Orchestra (conductor - Kyle Patterson); Bro Jemima Orchestra (conductor - Philippa Roberts); St. David's Area Orchestra (conductor - Hilary Lewis).
During the evening concert, the winners of the open competitions performed.
They were as follows: Open Strings - Lily Whitehurst, Saundersfoot; Open Brass - Wesley Davies, Tenby; Open Woodwind - Alyx Phillips, Fenton; Open Piano - Emma Groves, Milford Haven; Open Percussion - Carina Evans, Burton.
Also playing in the concert were the winners of the ensemble competitions.
The overall winner of this year's festival was Lily Whitehurst, Saundersfoot.
Mr. Phil Thompson presented the prizes on behalf of Texaco Ltd.
The numbers of pupils who participated in this year's event and the high standards of performance clearly demonstrates the strength of music in the county's schools and why Pembrokeshire continues to be one of the leading musical counties in Wales.
On Wednesday, July 14, 320 musicians will perform in the Primary Schools' Prom Concert at Sir Thomas Picton School.
