Pupils from a Pembrokeshire school are set to embark on a project to rebrand a local village.
The scheme will see pupils from Sir Thomas Picton Secondary School in Haverfordwest working closely with the construction giant Costain, to rebrand the village of Robeston Wathen on the A40, which is set to see a by-pass constructed as part of a Welsh Government road improvement scheme.
The school has set up a working party to rebrand the village in collaboration with Costain, Pembrokeshire County Council, the local pub, various B&Bs and the local community.
"The A40 will soon see a bypass built and the village of Robeston Wathen is in danger of being be cut off and becoming a sleepy hamlet," explained Mr. Tim WIlliams, deputy head teacher of Sir Thomas Picton.
"We pride ourselves at the school on preparing our young people for the adult world, and a big concern for this area is the number of young people who are forced to move away to gain employment or to go to university and it's always difficult for them to return.
"As you can imagine, this is a real problem for the county's economic prosperity, and we really want to play our part.
"A recent Estyn inspection has deemed our enterprise efforts to be outstanding and we think we've come up with a cracker of a new initiative for our Year 10 students.
"This is in addition to us already working with Pembrokeshire Lottery who provide us with £2,000 every year to lend on to our sixth formers 'Dragons Den' style.
"As you can imagine, we are very excited about the whole initiative," continued Mr. Williams.
The initiative will involve site visits, sales pitches by the pupils, company presentations and displays, along with some very interesting ideas on what the village could be transformed into.
Ideas have already included a book village like Hay-on-Wye, gambling village Las Vegas style, spa village, jazz village, and designer outlet village etc.
The whole project is being officially launched on Friday, March 5, with a reception in Robeston Wathen Village Hall.
