Narberth 16 pts. Corus 15
With such a strong wind at their backs in the second half, you would have been forgiven for thinking Narberth would have walked away with this game against Corus, but in fact, the opposite is true.
Had visiting centre Scott Robinson kicked a penalty against the stiff breeze, he would have secured victory for the Port Talbot outfit, but the elements were against him and so the Otters took the spoils.
Quite why the home team failed to capitalise on having such a natural advantage is difficult to understand, especially after their first half performance was so impressive; even team manager Rob Lewis was at a loss to describe why this was the case, although the relief at winning their first home game of the season was obvious.
"We didn't play the conditions well at all in the second half. We didn't play to the corners, we kept putting it up. We needed to be more controlled. The more the game went on, the better they got.
"We played exceptionally well in the first half, but when the game went to uncontested scrums, we weren't able to play to our strengths."
It was these strengths that helped Narberth do so well in the first half despite facing the disadvantage of a howling gale, a big set of opponents and a centre that was seemingly kicking goals for fun.
Scott Robinson's left boot kept the visitors ahead for the most part prior to the break as he slotted over four penalties in total, yet Narberth hung in there through gritted teeth and excellent forward play.
They were dominant in the scrums, effective in the lineout, while the back row of Lloyd Phillips, Gareth Bateman and the dynamic Colin Davies reigned supreme, especially in the close quarters where they made the hard yards.
Outside-half Craig Jones kept the Otters in touching distance with two penalties and a conversion of a penalty try that was awarded due to the visitors retreating rapidly by the try line and falling down in a heap as a result.
Then came the turnaround. Corus came out of the blocks and mimicked Narberth's game plan. Against the elements, it was a case of pick up and drive, look for support and grind our way upfield. It was an effective tactic, helped no less due to Narberth's inability to clear the ball downfield effectively when they had the chance.
Robinson snuck over a penalty after Alex Sheehy and Sean Lloyd were yellow-carded for a bout of fisty cuffs and with a two-point cushion heading into the final quarter the baton of control was passed over again.
Fortunately for the Otters, Robbie Morgan received a yellow for Corus and Craig Jones slotted over the resulting penalty, leaving the game tightly poised at 16-15, which is how it stayed for the remaining 20 minutes or so of the match.
