Questions are being asked after Whitland's Brains distribution depot closed just 23 months after being set up with grant money from Carmarthenshire County Council and the Welsh Assembly.

The £1million flagship distribution centre based at the old creamery in Whitland closed on Friday, May 8, with the loss of a number of jobs.

Some staff were relocated to other depots in South West Wales, but it's known that all the warehousemen are now out of work.

Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire AM Angela Burns is now asking whether the investment in the depot, which only opened in June 2007, represented value for money.

"I do think there are valid questions to ask here about how the money was spent.

"I have written to Carmarthenshire County Council asking if there are any plans to look into clawing back any of the investment and reusing it for another project."

Mrs. Burns was also saddened by the job losses.

"I appreciate that trading conditions are difficult at the moment but any job loss is a severe blow to the area.

"I understand that a number of the workers were unable to take up the offer of continued employment so far from their homes and that inevitably there have been redundancies."
