Tenby United managed to topple division three west team, Cardigan, under the floodlights at Heywood Lane last week, in a tense and entertaining KO Cup semi--final clash.

The game was a close encounter, with neither side giving much away, but it was underdogs Tenby who scored the first try, with Nicky Allen crashing over the Teifisiders' line after quick second phase ball was utilised well by scrum-half Will Crockford.

The conversion was duly slotted over by Neil Powling, who had earlier landed a penalty, and with two other penalties being kicked by Cardigan's Aled Thomas, the half-time score stood at 10-6 to Tenby, which on the state of play was a fair reflection of the game.

Their lead was extended after the break when Ben Armstrong stole the ball from a Cardigan lineout to feed possession to prop Lee Tucker, who charged down the blindside and used his strength to cross the line to score another converted try.

Cardigan were soon fighting back and got the try their pressure deserved through Liam Hall, who claimed his first touchdown for the club, which fullback Thomas converted.

United, who play in division four west, responded with another Powling penalty to give them a seven-point lead.

But in a nail-biting finale, the Cardies grabbed another try through Gavin Morris. The conversion would have drawn them level, but it was off target, leaving the Seasiders with a slender two-point advantage.

Tenby fly-half Powling made sure of victory in the dying moments as he side-stepped his way through the Cardigan defence for the final try of the evening, which he also converted, to give the United a pathway to the final of the Pembrokeshire Knockout Cup.
