It may be based near Cardiff, but the work of Wales' only children's hospice is also vital in Pembrokeshire.

Ty Hafan, near Barry, gives help and support to 12 families from the county who have children with life limiting illness.

The children travel regularly to the hospice for respite and palliative care, given in a caring, therapeutic and family atmosphere, without any cost to the families involved.

Ty Hafan's work was outlined to Angela Burns AM on a recent tour of the hospice's beautiful buildings and grounds.

"I was so impressed by the stunning setting and buildings at Ty Hafan and by the wonderfully calm and friendly atmosphere that surrounded it," she said.

"I was also surprised to hear of the high number of Pembrokeshire families who use the service given that we are a relatively small and sparsely populated county.

"The work they undertake makes a huge difference to families and I would ask that if anyone's thinking of giving this Christmas, then they look to Ty Hafan."

One such family is the Thomases from Bethesda near Narberth who have been visiting Ty Hafan with their 13-year-old son Jacob for the past year. Jacob has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophe and has spent three weekends at the centre with his family staying in one of the hospice's family rooms. "I really like it there, they take us out to places like the cinema and they've got a teenagers room too," said Jacob. "I'm looking forward to going again." While Jacob is being looked after his nine-year-old sister Polly gets to spend some quality time with her mum and dad. "We are able to go out, knowing that Jacob is quite safe," said mum Caroline. "He has such fun and I have complete confidence in the staff. It's a big help. Sometimes I can be up several times in the night and it's a real break for me."
