Narberth made it two out of two in National League division two on Saturday with a narrow 23 points to 17 victory over Abercynon.
However, the Otters looked far less convincing than in their previous game, with poor handling in the back line resulting in a number of missed opportunities.
It was heart in mouth time for the Narberth faithful at times as Abercynon, relegated from division one last season, fought back and came close to overturning an 11-point Otters lead as they capitalised on some slipshod defence and indiscipline.
However, the visitors did just enough to hold out, bagging the three points to put them among the early front runners in their league.
Abercynon started brightly enough, with home fullback Hugh Davies slotting over a penalty just two minutes in.
Although a couple of try-scoring opportunities went begging when the final passes failed to go to hand, the Otters gradually began to exert control, with veteran back row man Alan Reynolds again proving an influential force.
Skipper Jason Jennings and South Sea islander Emori Katalau were also in commanding form in the linesout, Katalau providing the platform for the Otters' pack to drive hooker Kevin Davies over for the first try of the game.
Outside-half Simon Daniel failed to add the extras, while Davies was equally unlucky for Cynon when a penalty attempt at the other end struck an upright.
A penalty from Daniel increased Narberth's lead, but Cynon stand-off Richard Jones landed a well-taken drop goal to reduce the deficit.
Indiscipline in the Otters' ranks gifted Davies two penalties, with the Cynon fullback graciously accepting the invitation to put the homesters four points in front at the break.
With the wind at their backs, Narberth came out with all guns blazing after the change around, pegging Cynon back in their own 22 for the third quarter with a series of set-piece and tap penalty moves, but, to the frustration of the large contingent of Otters supporters, the home defence held firm.
However, with Reynolds, fellow back row men Jamie Bohata and Gareth Bennett and scrum-half Chris Macdonald piling on the pressure and maintaining possession through several phases, it was only a matter of time before the homesters cracked, wing Andrew George going over for an unconverted try in the left corner after Macdonald created space.
Davies failed with two penalties for Cynon, while Daniel sliced a drop goal attempt wide, leaving the Otters with a scant one point advantage going into the final third.
Second half substitute Tevita Manesitave immediately made an impact for the Otters, increasing their lead with an unconverted try and setting up the fourth when he kicked ahead from just outside the visitors' 22.
The strong wind carried the ball further down field, with centre Will Morgan showing his pace to win the race to the touchdown.
Daniel was again off target with the conversion, leaving the visitors with an 11-point advantage.
The Otters appeared to settle back in the closing minutes, with James Lynch grabbing an unconverted try.
Tomorrow (Saturday), Narberth travel to Ystradgynlais, with the supporters' bus leaving at 12.30 pm.
