Tribute has been paid to long-serving Pembrokeshire county councillor William (Billy) Davies, who died this week. Clr. Davies, of Melrose, Templeton, passed away, suddenly, but peacefully, at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, on Monday. He was 75. A member of the authority since its inception in 1995, Clr. Davies had previously been a member and vice-chairman of the former South Pembrokeshire District Council, which he served throughout its 22-year existence. A former Narberth rugby player, Clr. Davies was a regular supporter of the club and had been a vice-president since the inception of the scheme. Affectionately known as Willie Pop, he was a retired farmer and had served the local community as a community, district and county councillor for over 30 years. Expressing his deep sense of sadness on the passing of a true and genuine friend, Pembrokeshire County Council leader, Clr. John Davies, said: "Bill Davies was at all times dependable in judgment and always loyal to commonsense. His concern towards others was immeasurable. "His words of wisdom and solid support towards his county and electorate will be sorely missed by elected members and officers alike. He was from the very top drawer of county councillors." Clr. Davies was the beloved husband of Mair, dear father of Tegwen, Huw, Rhys and Sian, respected father-in-law, loving grandfather and great-grandfather. The funeral has been arranged for tomorrow (Saturday) with a public service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, at 10.45 am. There is a request for family flowers only, but donations in lieu may be made, if desired, for Narberth Health Centre, c/o Mr. David Gibbs, The Beeches, Templeton. The funeral arrangements are being carried out by Ken Davies and Sons, Funeral Directors, Clunderwen.
