Seniors
Once again home advantage proved decisive as we beat our South Pembs counterparts by 6.5 matches to 1.5 (writes B.J.A.W.).
Last Thursday, South Pembs were our guests and brought along eight pairs of their best golfers for the friendly showdown. All the intrepid golfers stood around awaiting the start, so on the stroke of 11 am the starter mounted his rostrum, but due to a late withdrawal on each team, protocol was shelved and play commenced with a two-ball taking preference over the usual captains and their partners setting the pace.
As is custom, the visitors have the honour off the first tee, so Clive Pitten (South Pembs) teed-off to 'pit' his talents against Mel Neale. Unfortunately, his talents were no match for Mel's, who played solid golf and won this match comfortably.
Then it was down to the captains and their partners to take to the fairways. From Trefloyne, Graham Harrison and his usual partner Bob Burks (some say they are joined at the hip!) were up against South Pembs stand-in captain Peter Bowling and Mike Bannister (late of Rosemarket).
Graham and Bob soon took a three-hole lead, but Peter and Mike fought back and were one down with one to play. However, a half on the last was enough for the hosts to win the match.
Next off were the Jones boys, Derek and Steve, against John George and Kevin Dewhurst and after a 'ding dong' battle, stamina told and the Joneses were victorious.
Third quartet off were Wyn Hopkins and Darrell Jones (great to see you back playing), whose opponents were Fred Mountney and David Evans. A most enjoyable match, I'm told, with the home pairing winning reasonably well!
Wayne Connett and Glyn Jones (our only losers) were up against Mike Williams and Mike Leighs, who proved the better pair on the day and recorded their team's only victory.
Our next pairing of Bob Maxwell and Dave Crowley proved too strong for Bill Wright and Angus Hayward and won at the 12th.
The 'trump card' pairing of Pat Casement and Keith Warmington took on Brian Williams and Ray Puddefoot and returned to the clubhouse easy victors.
Last, but not least, out were Richard Davies and Steve Scanlon against Brian Phillips and John Parsons. This quartet could not be separated and after 18 hard fought holes the match ended all-square.
After an excellent meal, both captains thanked Trefloyne GC and the caterers for their hospitality and thanked their respective teams for their support (long may it continue). Graham thanked Darrell for doing the raffle and welcomed him back to the fold after his short convalescence after an operation. Peter apologised for those from South Pembs who did not stay for the meal and is looking forward to the return fixture on June 10.
Results (Trefloyne first): Mel Neale bt C. Pitten 5 and 4; Graham Harrison and Bob Burks bt P. Bowling and M. Bannister 1 up; Derek Jones and Steve Jones bt J. George and K. Dewhurst 5 and 3; Darrell Jones and Wyn Hopkins bt F. Mountney and D. Evans 4 and 3; Wayne Connett and Glyn Jones lost to M. Williams and M. Leighs 3 and 2; Dave Crowley and Bob Maxwell bt B. Wright and A. Hayward 7 and 6; Pat Casement and Keith Warmington bt B. Williams and R. Puddefoot 4 and 3; Richard Davies and Steve Scanlon halved with B. Phillips and J. Parsons.
