Captains' Day 2009

On Saturday, May 16, men's captain Dave McMann and lady captain Ann Dassen arranged an 18-hole, shotgun start, Texas Scramble, with additional prize categories to suit the young and the 'not so young'.

In true Trefloyne fashion, the vast majority of the teams of four were mixed, with gents, ladies and juniors playing together. It was also lovely to see our new members, beginners and families mixing with our regulars. All players were given a specially engraved boxed set with a pitchmark repairer and ball marker as a memento of the day.

Sadly the weather was not as friendly, as there were howling gales and heavy showers for the first two hours, but the sun eventually broke through to dry us off!

The captains team comprised Dave, Ann, Joan Beynon and Oliver Duckett our new nead professional. Although they decided they would not be eligible for any prize themselves, a separate competition was held to "Guess their Score" with all proceeds going to Tenovus.

At 11 am, the proprietors, photographer and Barney the beagle, gathered around the brand new elevatd 16th tee box to watch the captain's team make the inaugural tee shots. The inevitable 'ladies first' was muttered, leaving lady captain Ann smiling politely and wondering what on earth club to use in a howling gale with wind against and not make a complete fool of herself. Even though it is a mere 137 yards, a five-wood was chosen and she bravely stepped up to the tee and hoped for the best.

To a rousing cheer, the ball landed smack in the centre of the green and just rolled off the edge. It was to be her best shot of the day, but nevertheless the kiss from Barney was very welcome!

The game progressed, with Ian from Pembrokeshire Photography appearing from nowhere on his buggy, leaving some of us holding our stomachs in and adjusting our unflattering hats! Some wonderful shots were taken on the day, including some for the family album.

Cheers, groans, the inevitable shouts of  'fore' and most importantly laughter could be heard from all parts of the course. We can blame the wind for all the lost balls and the battered expressions, the rain for the lousy fashion sense and 'hat hair', but thankfully the sun did eventually break through to enjoy the final holes.

Once finished, we gathered around the open fire in the clubhouse and enjoyed hot food from Helen and Arno's 'Captains Day Specials' board.

Presentations were made afterwards in the marquee with the following results.

Longest drive (4th hole): men - James Maxwell; ladies - Michelle Richards; juniors - Bethan Morris.

Nearest the rope (18th hole): men - Martin Yates; ladies - Di Neale; juniors - Morgan Duckett.

Nearest the pin (new 16th): men - Martin Yates; ladies - Vicky Burks; juniors - no winner.

All won £15 worth of Pro Shop vouchers.

Team scores: 1. Beth McMann, James Maxwell, Matthew McMann and Bob Maxwell 58.7 points (£25 worth of Pro Shop vouchers each); 2. Meurig Evans, Mark, Sue and Lewis Ensor 61.7 (£20 worth of Pro Shop vouchers each); 3. Di Neale, Jeremy, Tracy and Bethan Morris 62.7 (£15 worth of Pro Shop vouchers each).

The 'guess the captains team score' was won by Graham Longster who was 0.2 away from their score of 60.5. He won an hour's worth of free lessons kindly donated by Oliver Duckett.

Well for most of us there was only the raffle left to win a prize! The table was brimming with gifts kindly donated by the members. Most prizes were won individually, but there was one notable exception. Armed with a handful of tickets given to him by his grandparents and parents Helen and Arno, young Daniel Tiesing kept popping up like a veritable 'jack-in-the-box' to claim at least seven prizes. We have heard that Helen did enjoy the Ferrero Rocher she extracted from his hoard!

Seriously though, between the guess the score and the raffle, an excellent £204 was raised for Tenovus on the day.

Later on in the clubhouse it was nice to see Di Neale ( our very own Princess Di ), enjoying her two wins by making sure husband Mel realised he was sitting on the losers table... something he very often points out to the rest of us after he has had one of his many wins! Well done Di!

Finally, we would like to thank a few people for making the day so special. Firstly Oliver and Mary Maxwell for all their help, hard work and advice. Secondly Helen and Arno for providing us all with a warm welcome and their excellent food. Thirdly Ian and Beverley from Pembrokeshire Photography who have 300 photos of the day available online at http://www.pembrokeshirephotography.com">www.pembrokeshirephotography.com. Fourthly Gareth Knight, Ian Duffy and Andrew Burgess for all their hard work and the excellent condition of the course. Also the Beynon family for their support, investment and commitment they have put in to continually improve not just our course, but the 19th hole as well! An enormous thank you to fellow committee members for your continuous voluntary hard work and lastly to our families for their support, love and understanding.

Ladies' Section

Two of our  Trefloyne Ladies pairs played in their separate foursomes fixtures recently. Fair Ball and Beth McMann won their West Wales Ladies match on the 18th green at Haverfordwest against Florence and Linda.  On Thursday, May 14, Sue Shooter and Vicky Burks, playing at Trefloyne, also won their match, beating the ladies from Newport Links on the 18th green to go through to the fourth round of the Daily Mail Foursomes. Well done girls!

That same evening saw the start of the Glenda Pearce Trophy (Blue Belles) and the Mid Summer Trophy (Congu). Some good scores were returned for these mix and match 12-hole stablefords by Ann Dassen, Sue Ensor and Chris Collinson. There are eight more to go, with the best six results counting towards the trophies. Tee times between 5 and 6.30 pm alternate Thursdays.

As predicted, a group of our newer ladies continue to do very well. The May Mid-Week Medal was won by Chris Collinson, who was given a hearty round of applause for winning her first competition.

She continued this good form to take one of our low handicap golfers Michelle Richards to the 16th in her first matchplay singles knockout game on Sunday. Michelle won 3 and 2 and was full of praise for Chris afterwards.

Two of our other newer ladies were asked to play for the team on Monday, May 18, away to Tenby. Both Sue Ensor and Lind Cowerd played exceptionally well despite the horrendously windy conditions and matches taking longer than five hours.

Both not only supported their partners, but won holes themselves. Sue partnered with Michelle Richards went on to win their match against Heather Morgan and Ann Marsden. Rita Collins and Liz Crockford halved their match with Anita Davies and Liz Storey when Rita's putt stopped on the edge of the hole on the 18th.

Tenby's Holly Watkins was in great form with Anne Wilks to beat Vicky Burks and Gwyneth Jewitt and Gill Roberts and Jean Charnock beat Trefloyne's Linda Kromrei and Lind.

The final match was eventually won by Tenby's Marion Clarke and Mel Smith on the 18th green, beating Ann Dassen and 12-year-old Bethan Morris, who played some fantastic golf and never stopped smiling... even though the wind threatened at times to carry her to Caldey!  (Ann has booked putting lessons to support her better next time... sorry Beth!).

Well done to Tenby Ladies and thank you for the friendly day .

Our young rising star, Michelle Richards with Ann Dassen (along for the ride as lady captain), competed in the W. W. Ladies Presidents Cup at Newport Links on Thursday, May 21. Michelle cleverly forgot to mention to Ann it was a 27-hole medal event until the last minute. However there was glorious sunshine on the day with beautiful scenery to be enjoyed whilst waiting on some tees! Michelle played very well and went on to win the best gross prize over 18 holes. Carmarthen's legendary Vicky Thomas won the Presidents Cup for an unbelievable 15th time!

Last Saturday, the qualifier was held for the Peugeot Coronation Foursomes. Winners going through to Clyne in July were Anne Morgan and Ann Dassen, with runners-up being their playing partners Rita Collins and Chris Collinson. The scores were not fantastic, but there was much friendly banter between them and a thoroughly enjoyable game of golf!
