This Sunday sees the start of our first Futures Afternoon, a concept designed to attract all of our junior members to compete on a more regular basis. An 18-hole competition for all yellow/red tee handicap golfers will start at 1 pm, followed by a nine-hole competition for blue tee handicap golfers. There will also be a three-hole competition for our newer members without a handicap. Please remember that all juniors under the age of eight will need to be accompanied by an adult.

 PRO's Tip

of the week

I see a lot of golfers on the putting green practising 'missing putts' by trying to hole 10-30 foot putts before they commence their round. Next time you are on the putting green, structure your 10 minutes of practice on holing putts, rather than missing them. Take four tee pegs and place them at compass points one foot around the hole. Play a putt from each of these points and having holed all four, move the tee pegs out to two feet. If you miss a putt, you have to go back to the start (one foot). Your goal is to get to five feet before you tee-off. This exercise not only develops your technical ability, but more importantly heightens your mental strength and competitiveness through practising the positive (holing putts), rather than the negative (missing putts).

Captain's Day

Members are reminded of the Captain's Day Texas Scramble tomorrow (Saturday). All are eligible and welcome to play. Great fun and good prizes, including nearest the pin from our new elevated tee box on the 16th!

Please ring the Pro Shop on 845639 to arrange a last-minute entry and most importantly ring Arno and Helen to book your buffet on 844429!

Ping Mixed Foursomes

On Sunday, May 3, the Trefloyne pairings of Paul Howells and Michelle Richards, Dave and Beth McMann and Martin Yates and Ann Dassen travelled to Carmarthen GC to play three couples from Ashburnham.

Martin and Ann went out first and won their match 6 and 5, followed by Dave and Beth, who lost by the same margin. All collected on the terrace to watch the final four approach the 18th green, with the game still going. Michelle sunk a 12-foot putt to win the game two up and the match for Trefloyne.

A big thank you to the Ashburnham team for a very friendly encounter and Carmarthen for providing the neutral venue. We now go on to play the winners of Machynys v Cardigan at home.

Whitewell Cup

There was a record turnout for this year's Whitewell Cup mixed Greensome Foursomes competition, as ever mixing the young with the not so young and putting marital harmony to the test.

No such problems for the eventual winners, Bob and Vicky Burks, with 40 points, who pipped Alun Phillips and Ann Dassen on the back nine, with mother and son partnership Caroline and Sam Fletcher third.

For the rest there was consolation in Arno's desserts and some fine ales enjoyed on the sunny terrace. Winner of the 'most enjoyed dessert' of the afternoon must go to Anya Beynon (pictured).

Ladies Golf

On Tuesday, April 28, we held a Greensome Foursomes Competition, pairing lower handicap players with higher ones where possible.

The winners were Vicky Burks and Lind Cowerd with an excellent 39 points, with Anna Hubbard and Ann Dassen second with 35.

The Ladies Challenge Bowl winner on Saturday, May 2, in very cool and blustery conditions, was Linda Kromrei with a nett 78, followed closely by Michelle Richards.

The bag draw was shared between Michelle and Anne Morgan.

Michelle went on to represent Trefloyne in the County Championships at Haverfordwest on the following Tuesday. Although she missed the cut, she played extremely well, especially as she had to play off 'scratch', rather than her usual handicap of 16. Ironically, her practice round score the day before would have been good enough to see her into the semi-final... but that's golf! Congratulations to the winners and a big thank you to the organisers.

On the same day, back at Trefloyne, we held a Stableford Competition. Heather Thorne came in with a cracking 40 points, followed by best pal Linda Kromrei on 36.

We would like to congratulate Eunice Parkes, Janet Wood and Meg Tiltman, who have recently been awarded their Congu handicap cards, and we look forward to many years of playing alongside you in all of our many and varied competitions. Well done for all your hard work.

Last Saturday, the Stableford Competition was won by Ann Dassen with 32 points, followed by Anne Morgan on 29 on back nine from Gwynneth Jewitt. Coming a very close fourth was Chris Collinson with a fantastic 28 points. Her consolation prize was winning the bag draw.

Chris (aka CC) along with Anna Hubbard, Sue Ensor and Lind Cowerd have been playing extremely well since gaining their Congu handicaps in February and we will not be surprised to see their names on some trophies or wearing our team shirts very soon!

Our Trefloyne team representatives have had mixed fortunes recently. In the Mail on Sunday third round played at Milford in horrendous conditions, the girls lost by the narrowest of margins 3-2. Anne Morgan had a very good win, but unfortunately the cold and wet got the better of Vicky Burks and Michelle Richards. Fair Fraser and Linda Kromrei finished with halved matches. By the end, though, the sun had started to shine and warm congratulations were given to the Milford team.

As fate would have it, the following week saw our Daily Mail Foursomes pair of Vicky Burks and Sue Shooter play the ladies from Milford again, but this time at home. Vicky and Sue had a very comfortable win of 7 and 6 to even the honours and now meet the ladies from Newport at home this week. Good luck!

Sensational seniors

On a typical Pembrokeshire spring afternoon, on Thursday, May 7, Trefloyne Seniors played hosts to their near neighbours from Derllys Court, Bancyfelin (DCB) Golf Club (writes Chip).

Hoping to get back to winning ways after playing second fiddle to Newport the previous Thursday, boy didn't we do well, as we swamped the opposition by seven matches to nil.

Although shellshocked, the DCB players joined in the post-match activities wholeheartedly, threating to reverse the result in the return fixture. Dream on!

After Glyn Jones had relieved the home players of a few quid for food etc, the match commenced promptly at 12 noon.

First to use the tee was our 'leader' Graham Harrison in partnership with Bob Burks, who were up against his opposite number Dave Wood and the man who has made DCB possible, Rob Walters, known to his members as HRH!

What a superb game this turned out to be. It was nip and tuck all the way, with the Trefloyne pairing going to the 18th one up. A half would do for victory and, yes, you've guessed right, our captain fantastic sank a huge putt to put Trefloyne one up.

Following on their heels were Darrell Jones and Derek Jones taking on two 'old' pals of mine, Frank Simmons and Reg Powell and after a ding dong match, which saw some marvellous shots produced by both pairs, the Jones boys emerged triumphant 3 and 2.

Next to use the first tee were Pat Casement with Trevor Lewis in opposition to Dave Newman and Rick Lewis. As usual, both Pat and Trevor mixed the flamboyant with steady golf to see off Dave and Rick by 4 and 3, with Trevor winning the nearest the pin competition on our notorious 12th.

Hot on their heels were 'soon to be married' Gary Hopkins partnered by his 'best man' Barry Wood, who took on from the 'Bont' and DCB, Gerald Evans and Derek Shadrach. This turned out to be a most enjoyable and friendly encounter. Both Barry and Gerald are past cricketing colleagues, so as they strolled down the fairways, lots of cricket anecdotes were exchanged. Back to golf and Gary and Barry completely outplayed Gerald and Derek and won convincingly by 8 and 7.

Last year's captain John James and Terry Harvey were up next against John Rees and Eric Davies. The first nine were relatively even, with John and Terry holding the upper hand at the turn. During the back nine these two big hitters took over and romped to a 5 and 4 victory.

The penultimate pair of Alan Chapman, disguised as the world renowned comedian 'Jimmy Edwards', and Glyn Jones were faced by the strong pairing of Les Burgoyne and Terry Priest. This turned out to be an enjoyable match, with both Glyn and Terry receiving shots galore. It was the nerve of the hosts that held firm as they won 2 and 1.

The last pairing, which should have been the fifth pair and would have been but for the time difference of one hour between Red Roses and Tenby (!) saw John 'time lag' Shaw along with John Hargrave playing against Dave Evans and Ian Roberts. This was a real humdinger of a match, with both pairs winning and losing holes alternatively. All square at the 18th, shot for shot, on the green, missed putt, holed putt and the two Johns emerged victorious, giving Trefloyne a resounding victory by seven matches to nil.

After this result, all at Trefloyne are looking forward to the return fixture. Can we win at Bancyfelin? Of course we can.

Results: (Trefloyne first) were: Graham Harrison and Bob Burks bt Dave Wood and Rob Waters 1 up; Darrell Jones and Derek Jones bt Frank Simmons and Reg Powell 3 and 2; Pat Casement and Trevor Lewis bt Dave Newman and Rick Lewis 4 and 3; Gary Hopkins and Barry Wood bt Gerald Evans and Derek Shadrack 8 and 7; John James and Terry Harvey bt John Rees and Eric Davies 5 and 4; Alan Chapman and Glyn Jones bt Les Burgoyne and Terry Priest 2 and 1; John Shaw and John Hargrave bt Dave Evans and Ian Roberts 1 up.

After an excellent meal prepared and presented by Arno, Helen and their staff, we returned to the clubhouse for a beer or two, the raffle, and the respective captains addresses, which I hear were very entertaining. Well done everyone.

Please note: Next home game is against South Pembs on Thursday, May 28, at 12 noon. Players are asked to be at the club by 11.30 am at the very latest.

HSBC Wee Wonders Championships

Local qualifier: Trefloyne was the setting for the local qualifier of the HSBC Wee Wonders Championship on Sunday. Founded by Alasdai Good, head PGA at Gullane Golf Club, the HSBC Wee Wonders Championships is a national junior golf event for the whole of Great Britain and Ireland. Boys and girls aged five to 12 can enjoy the challenge and fun of competitive golf in an environment where the life lessons learnt by youngsters are as important as the game itself. The format of the event was a 36-shot flag competition on a specially designed par three course.

Winners of the local qualifiers who will now go on to regional finals were: girls 11 -12, Bethan Morris, flag to the right of the 9th green (Trefloyne Golf Club); girls 5 - 8, Grace Connelly, flag to the left of the 9th green; boys 7-8, Harrison Duckett, flag 8th green (Trefloyne Golf Club); boys 9-10, Luke Harris, flag 1st green (South Pembrokeshire Golf Club); boys 11-12, Henrik Jaakola, flag 1st green (Tenby Golf Club).
