Ladies' Section
Tuesday before last, it was decided to give all the ladies a taste of what it is like playing in our league matches. Teams were chosen to include one experienced player 'teaching' the other the art of matchplay.
Everyone enjoyed the four ball better ball format and there were some good wins for some and one match going right to the 18th green. No doubt some may be wearing our turquoise team shirts before long.
It has also been good practice for our Category Five players who have entered our ladies' matchplay competitions this year for the first time.
It was decided to award the prizes via a big draw on this occasion, with Sue Ash, Hazel Garrod and Jane Adams having all the luck and thanks being given to the team players for their coaching.
On the Sunday we had a great entry for the 'Dorrit Parry Vase', an 18-hole Stableford competition set up by Dorrit, who is a past lady captain and one of the founders of our ladies 'section.
We look forward to seeing Dorrit back with us as soon as possible and wish Mel a very full and speedy recovery.
Scoring was extremely good, with the eventual winner being young Bethan Morris with 42 points, second Fair Ball 40 pts, third Michelle Richards 38 pts and fourth Heather Thorne on 37 pts.
At last we also have our first winner of our unofficial Sunday Swingers competition. Many of the girls combined the two competitions and Michelle Richards's score of 30 pts playing off -8, pipped Ann Dassen (-4) on the back nine. Michelle had a round of applause in the clubhouse and Mel and Di Neale will be donating a cup. Meanwhile Michelle had to make do with Mel presenting her with one of Helen and Arno's finest coffee cups!
The slate will now be wiped clean to play the second round, with all players relieved to be going back to full handicap.
Linda Kromrei and Ann Dassen represented Trefloyne at St. David's last Monday for the Pembrokeshire Association of Lady Captains' annual foursomes competition. Both drew dear friends from Tenby as partners, Ann with fellow lady captain Heather and Linda with Vena Davies.
Both pairs did well, with Ann and Heather coming second and Linda and Vena third in the nett competitions.
Both Heather and Ann plan to play together in this year's AJO Bowl and look forward to a much closer bond between the two clubs. After all, we have the best of both parkland and links golf on our doorstep!
Seniors v
Newport Pembs
Prospects for an enjoyable game were not looking good, the journey to Newport was wet with low clouds. We could imagine the ball disappearing into the mist on the hills. However, by tee-off there were signs of the sun breaking through. Eventually it turned out very pleasant and there was not much wind, unusual in Newport!
Captain Graham Harrison with partner Bob Burks began proceedings, taking on Morys Rhys and Cyril Lewis.
The home pair took an early lead, winning the first two holes with par. At one point they were four up, then Graham and Bob pulled their socks up and reduced the deficit to one going into the 18th; a half wasn't enough to square the game.
At the same time, teeing-off the 10th were Terry Morgan and Steve Jones playing Tony Bailey and John Civil. Steve started well, winning the 10th and 13th, before Terry took the 14th and 15th to go three up (having lost the 11th). The next three were shared before Terry won the first with a two! Tony pulled one back on the second before Steve won the fourth to go four up again. Two more halved holes gave the Trefloyne pair a 4/3 win.
Second off the first were Terry Harvey and Glyn Jones, paired against Phil Turner and Roy Harper. Comments from Terry and Glyn were that Phil played very well throughout, Terry parred two difficult holes and Glyn had a couple of good putts! However, he missed some that he shouldn't have done, giving Newport a 3/1 win.
Second from the 10th were Darrell Jones and Trevor Lewis against Ched Davies and John Lewis. A slow start by the Trefloyne pair saw them one down after three holes.
A warning about snakes in the rough on the 12th woke them up and they took the 13th and 15th to be one up at the turn. Winning three on the trot put them in good position, eventually winning the game 4/3.
Third from the first were Pat Casement and Dave Crowley, pitting their skills against Barry Onions and Roger Goodwin. This was a close game, with neither pair making a breakthrough, no more than two holes difference all the way, ending with Newport pair two up and one to play.
Meanwhile, off the 10th were John Bancroft and Mike Burke, playing Tony Greatrex and Stuart Lamb. Mike started off well and Trefloyne were two up after five. Newport hit back with three wins on the trot, the game ending with a 2/1 win for the Newport pair.
Fourth pair from the first were Gary and Wyn Hopkins (no relation) vieing with Bill Evans and Geof Jones. The Newport pair took an early lead which Gary and Wyn could not pull back, having a bad day at the office! Newport ran out victors by 5/4.
Penultimate from the 10th were John Sheppard and John Hargrave playing Ralph Nicholas and Teaugley Forrest. A close fought game decided by the dream putting of Ralph, Newport winning 3/2.
Lastly from the first were John James and Jack Zeraschi against Gareth Davies and Roy Bishop. John and Jack took the first two between them, but a par by Gareth on the third halted the run. However, John parred the fourth to go two up again. But, Roy replied with a par win on the fifth. Three holes were shared, before John and Jack sent shots into the gorse bushes on the well guarded ninth. A repeat of this on the 10th gave Newport the lead which increased with a 5 net 4 by Gareth on the 12th. Jack pulled one back on the 13th and John saved halves on the next three. However, he hit two wayward drives on the 17th, parred by Gareth for a 2/1 win for Newport. A consolation for Trefloyne was a birdie for John on the 18th!
Finally, from the 10th, Peter Scrivens and Phil Rees took on Roy Phillips and Ieuan Davies. After five holes, neither pair had won a hole. This soon changed, with Phil winning three of the next four to put Trefloyne three up. Three more shared holes before Peter sent his drive into a field to give the Newport pair the impetus to win three on the trot. Pete managed to win the next to last hole to put them one up with one to play. This proved a bit of an anti-climax, with all four losing their balls in the rough, most painful!
A third win for Trefloyne but seven for Newport, our first loss of the season. The rough on the new nine has certainly thickened this year; finding a ball was hard enough, but trying to hit it out was nigh on impossible!
A meal of sausages and mash was followed by the usual speeches and raffle.
Results were as follows: Graham and Bob lost to Morys and Cyril, 1 down; Terry and Glyn lost to Phil and Roy 3/1; Pat and Dave lost to Barry and Roger 2/1; Gary and Wyn lost to Phil and Geof 5/4; John and Jack lost to Gareth and Roy 2/1; Terry and Steve beat Tony and John 4/3; Darrell and Trevor beat Ched and John 4/3; John and Mike lost to Tony and Stuart 2/1; John and John lost to Ralph and Teaugley 3/2; Peter and Phil beat Roy and Ieuan 1 up.
