Following feedback received from locals on parking and traffic problems experienced in Tenby's Serpentine Road, town councillors have agreed to recommend two proposals to Pembrokeshire County Council which they feel could help alleviate the problem.

Councillors met on site with the county council's traffic manager, Mr. John Price, before Christmas, when they agreed to give consideration to some proposals.

At Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas proposed that two of the ideas be recommended.

The first would see the introduction of a white line along the western pavement of Serpentine Road to delineate a pedestrian footpath, while the second proposal would see a 20-metre length of double yellow lines introduced at the Heywood Lane/Serpentine Road junction.

Clr. Mrs. Thomas, however, was not in favour of the county council looking into trialling a one-way traffic flow in Serpentine Road from the junction of Heywood Lane northwards to Narberth Road, as had been suggested.

After a vote, the majority of councillors agreed with Clr. Mrs. Thomas's proposal.

Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, said that a lot of feedback received also brought in other aspects of traffic problems in that area and felt that councillors were better off concentrating on Serpentine Road as the Safe Routes to School committee had spent a long time carrying out work on alleviating traffic problems in the area.

"I feel that the Safe Routes committee are better placed to discuss certain aspects of this area, so for us to muscle in on it now would be detrimental to the hard work they have achieved," she said.

Clr. Mrs. Sandra Williams, who teaches at the Tenby Infants School in Heywood Lane, also added that PCSO Idwal David had been policing the area for some time and had been in constant contact with the schools on the matter.

Clr. Mike Evans revealed that the Safe Routes in the Community Scheme plans were almost complete and that virtually everything the schools had asked for, i.e. crossings, new entrances, were to be incorporated into the proposal.
