Sir,
We thought that we had stopped the road widening at the junction in Lamphey. But no, Pembrokeshire County Council has started work on demolishing the Lamphey Estate stone wall and widening the road on the opposite side to the scheme we all thought had been abandoned.
What is the point of speeding the traffic through the villages in this part of the county? Where do the speeding vehicles go? Do they drive off the cliffs like lemmings? Many villages and Pembroke itself are being raped by traffic speeding schemes.
At present there are natural choke points which control the speed of the traffic.
St. Petrox is the next to be destroyed, the entrances to the villages on the coast road to Tenby, the access to Pembroke to continue the waste of one-million pounds on the Commons realignment, which has speeded the traffic past the resited primary and junior school. It is lethal. At school opening and closing times, the lollipop person takes her life in her hands daily.
Every other authority in the United Kingdom is taking active traffic calming measures and introducing 20 mph speed limits in built-up areas. Pembrokeshire County Council, alone, against all modern practice, is speeding the traffic through towns, villages and other housing estates. Total idiocy.
Ian Campbell Rutger,
Pembroke.
