Kicking-off down the slope with the stiff breeze in their favour, a very experimental and weakened Tenby United side found themselves trailing to newly-promoted Laugharne in the very first minute following an offside at the initial ruck of the game. The lead, however, was only retained for minutes, as a strong charge by centre Harry Bolton was carried on by Justin Richards, who cleverly released the ball for the supporting Jessie James to gallop over under the sticks. With a successful conversion, Tenby United attempted to protect their seven points to three lead, only to see the home side capitalise on a weak pass/dropped ball situation, allowing them to release their speedy backs, resulting in the wing crashing over the line. Another successful kick by Stephenson saw the home side stretch their lead to 10-7.

Seeing that they could stretch the Tenby United defence by swinging the ball wide, another promising move was only just snuffed out, with fullback Will Crockford tackling the wing into touch, right on the corner flag. Play quickly switched to the other end of the field with another penalty from the resulting ruck allowing Tenby United to kick for the corner. An excellent 'take and give' off the top of the resulting lineout by Gareth Edwards presented influential number eight Anthony Griffiths with the opportunity to drive toward the line, only to see the home side flanker kill the ball to bring the promising attack to an abrupt end. The resulting penalty was successful and after 15 minutes the scores were level at 10-10.

Tenby United were disrupted when a clash of heads involving the energetic Harry Bolton and Will Crockford saw both of them 'blood binned', resulting in Nicky Guymer and Johhny Lane taking the field. To slot two forwards in for two injured backs saw a re-shuffle of personnel and the home side capitalised on the disruption, with a series of dummy runs by the two centres allowing the outside-half to run across the field and put the winger over in the corner for an unconverted try.

The bad news for the visitors continued, with wing James Davies being carded for a clumsy tackle and from the ensuing penalty/lineout, the home side caught and rumbled over the line to put them 20 -10 in front.

From the resulting restart, and with their confidence sky high, they fielded the ball and ran the the length of the field to score wide out. An excellent touchline conversion compounded the lapse in defence by the visitors, who were now facing an uphill task in more ways than one, with the home side having the advantage of the slope with half-time rapidly approaching.

A clever piece of juggling by scrum-half Neil Duffy, who had been on hand supporting another Justin Richards charge, forced the home side to infringe and a successful penalty saw the first half finish with the visitors trailing 27-13.

Whatever was said at half-time by the coaching staff was immediately nullified when an eager forward got in front of the ball from the kick-off and a speculative up-and-under from the resulting penalty saw a lucky bounce beat Will Crockford and pop-up into the home side winger's hands - 32-13 and not a minute played in the second half.

To add to the torment, from the resulting restart the ball failed to travel 10 metres and Tenby United were again forced to defend, camped on their line.

Gritting their teeth, the visitors started to put some moves together, with Anthony Griffiths, Gareth Edwards and Justin Richards all prominent in some quick pick-up and gos, with excellent support work from an overworked Neil Duffy, Owen Thomas, Barry Wolveson and Harry Bolton.

With Nicky Guymer and Johhny Lane replacing Jessie James and Mark Badham, the introduction of some fresh legs seemed to lift the visitors and a superb mazy run by James Davies took play deep into the home side territory and good support play and quick hands by both Neil Duffy and Wyndham Williams allowed the charging Johnny Lane, and his size 17s, to crash over in the corner to close the score to 32-18.

Any enthusiasm from narrowing the score, however, was immediately shattered when two players left a bouncing ball to each other, only to see an opponent grab the opportunity with both hands to dive on the ball. The conversion very quickly stretched the lead back to 21 points.

Buoyed by this piece of good fortune, and uncertainty in the United ranks, the home side started to run the ball at every opportunity and it came as no surprise when the lead was increased when the defence was breached yet again, this time down to tiredness and a series of weak tackles, for the final score of the game and a well deserved 44 -18 victory for the home side and a good start for them to a season in 3 West.

With a local derby against Pembroke Dock Quins lined-up at Heywood Lane for next week, the management, players and coaching staff will need to focus all their attention on addressing the problems that surfaced during this opening fixture Tenby United fielded: W. Crockford, B. Wolveson, H. Bolton, O. Thomas, J. Davies, B. Large, N. Duffy, S. Payne, P. Lewis (G. Bevan), M. Badham (J. Lane), G. Edwards (S. Griffiths), J. Richards, L. James (N. Guymer), A.
