GREAT wizards with control over fierce dragons and magnificent spells, including one from Pembroke, are gathering in Wales to compete in one of the biggest tournaments in Welsh history. Magic: The gathering players from over 30 countries around the globe are preparing to battle it out for a share of $25,000 in a Grand Prix tournament to be held tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday at Cardiff International Arena. Magic: The gathering, the original and best trading card game, offers exciting and involved fantasy game play for all levels of player, from absolute beginner to battle-scarred expert. Competitors can unleash powerful spells, command deadly creatures and participate in devastating battle sequences and, thanks to the literally millions of strategic combinations, no two games can ever be the same. The last decade has seen Magic: The gathering evolve and grow - there are now in excess of six million players worldwide, with tournaments held in more than 70 countries. Each year, the Magic Pro Tour awards more than $3 million in prize money. One of the top players who regularly travels around the world to compete in international Magic tournaments is current Welsh champion, Gareth Beamish, of Pembroke. Said Gareth: "I can't wait for the Grand Prix in Cardiff. There's nothing like playing Magic on your own turf - almost like a home game. I'm prepared to take on the best in the world and I can't think of anywhere better to show what I've got than in my home country."
