Blackwood's Glan Yr Afon Park has not been a happy hunting ground for the Otters, but Narberth opened up in the second half with some scintillating rugby to pick up a top quality win against the Gwent Valleys team.

The visitors showed their intent by attacking from the start and an early move inside the Blackwood 22 almost resulted in a try when fullback Gareth James came into the line at pace.

It was James who gave the Otters the lead after six minutes with a close range penalty.

However, Blackwood recovered quickly with a well-taken try by centre Lewis Hamer following a clever switch of direction to touch down under the posts. Outside-half Jeremy Lloyd did not miss out on the chance of taking a straight forward conversion.

It was clear from the outset that Gareth James was on top of his kicking game. The fullback regained the lead for Narberth with a penalty near the 22 and then kicked a superb penalty from just inside the halfway line which hit the crossbar and bounced over to give the Otters a slender lead of two points at the interval.

After the re-start, a drop goal attempt by outside-half Simon Daniel was sliced to the right of the posts.

However, the Otters continued to look for scoring opportunities and increased the lead with a try by winger Andy Hamer. The move involved most of the backs from inside the Narberth half before centre Elgan Vittle made an incisive break.

Winger Andy Warner judged the situation perfectly when he moved over from the right in support and he finished in style in the left corner. Gareth James failed with his place kick for the only time in the match.

The try gave the Otters the required boost and they did not look back, raiding the Blackwood defences at regular intervals.

Winger Nick Jones extended the lead when he finished another exhilarating move. Substitute winger Deiniol Evans sliced through the Blackwood defenders before releasing the irrepressible Jones and Gareth James added the conversion points for good measure.

Blackwood were down but not quite out as hooker Leigh Murray was on hand to burst through for a try after Blackwood had won possession from a lineout. Jeremy Lloyd converted the try to keep Blackwood in the game momentarily.

Adrian Killa was one of a number of Narberth substitutes in the second half. Playing at fullback, the situation was tailormade for some his trademark runs out of defence.

He broke free in one such run and released Elgan Vittle for the centre to cross in the left corner for a try which was converted by Gareth James with a well-judged kick from the touchline.

The final try came from another exciting move by the backs. Scrum-half Chris Macdonald released the ball quickly and smoothly to Gareth James who had moved to outside-half. His initial break gave Killla the chance once again to cut through the Blackwood defence with a run which left players standing and Nick Jones did the rest to score his second try of the game near the posts. Gareth James completed the move appropriately by converting.

Speaking after the match, senior coach Robert Phillips said: "It was a very pleasing performance. We showed great continuity and the phase play went well. For long periods we took possession of the ball and there were some outstanding individual performances while the pack worked hard against a very committed Blackwood side."

Continuing he said: "Although our game was strewn with errors on occasions, confidence grew as we built up a lead and then we ran in some very nice tries. The skill levels were high while the skill, pace and tempo with which we played the games was out of the top drawer.

"The Blackwood side had showed good defence in the first half and a committed pack performance shut down a number of Narberth attacks. However, as the game progressed, the pace and tempo of the Narberth style of play gradually wore down the opposition and our threequarters capitalised on the extra space when gaps appeared in the defence."

Apart from mounting numerous attacking moves, the backs defended well, with Elgan Vittle and Chris Macdonald in particular making some try-saving tackles in the second half.

The Narberth pack worked together and as usual lock Jason Jennings caught the eye with his lineout work and mobility. Substitute prop Barry Davies also had an excellent game.
