Lewis Williams from Dyffryn Taf School in Whitland recently won first prize for his A Level project at Innovation 2011 in Cardiff. This prestigious event is a showcase exhibition and competition for the most innovative project work at A Level in Wales.
A team of distinguished judges selected Lewis's project from amongst the 70 projects that were on display.
Mr. Carwyn Jones, AM, First Minister of the National Assembly for Wales, presented Lewis with his awards.
Lewis won the prize for his innovative school crossing sign that he designed to promote the Carmarthen Council, 'Stop Means Stop' campaign in a bid to get motorists to stop when patrols attempt to walk children across the road.
Lewis's high tech sign features high intensity flashing LED's, flexible solar panels and two digital video cameras to capture evidence of cars that fail to stop. The sign also features a clever operating system that automatically switches the sign on and off when moved from the upright to the upside down position indicating the sign is not in operation.
Since finishing school, Lewis has moved to Harper Adams University College in Shrewsbury where he is studying for a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering specialising in off-road vehicles.
