Whitland defeated Llangwm by 91 runs in the Tony Pidgeon Ormond Youth Cup semi-final to reach the final of the cup competition for a record-breaking sixth year on the trot. In the match at Llangwm, the Whitland opening pair of Mathew Webb and James Davies gave the visitors a terrific start with a first wicket stand of 95 to provide the platform for a total of 156 for five. Webb scored 44 with six fours and James scored 41. Jonathan Thomas kept the scoreboard ticking over in his knock of 33 and there were also 24 extras. Dave Richards took two for 45 for Llangwm. Apart from Llangwm opening batsman and skipper Chris Thomas, who scored 18, no other Llangwm player reached double figures, although there were 15 extras in the Llangwm total of 65 all out. Mathew Webb followed up his excellent batting to take five for 19 and Daniel James took two for 19. Fishguard clinched a place in the final with an emphatic 63 runs win away to Pembroke, who were bowled out for 75 in response to a Fishguard total of 138 for four. Jonathan Strawbridge had an outstanding game for the visitors. The opener scored 71, including three massive sixes and eight fours, and received excellent support from Mathew Morgan with 28. Sean Powell and Jamie Kaijaks picked up a wicket each for the Pembroke team, who found it difficult to cope with the pace and accuracy of the bowling by Strawbridge. The exception was Rob Weston, who had a fighting innings of 30 before being bowled by Strawbridge, who ended with figures of five for six. Mathew Morgan took two for 16 and Gary Delaney two for 24. The final will be played at Carew on Sunday, August 24. Wickets will be pitched at 12.30 pm.
