WHITLAND 27 pts. Waunarlwydd 13

Whitland entertained Waunarlwydd last Saturday in Asda League Division One, and claimed all three points in an unconvincing win by 27 points to 13. Whitland's front five, without Aled Harris and Raff Williams, are lacking last year's dominance, and this is resulting in a lack of quality possession from the set pieces, and again, too many handling errors behind, resulting in many lost opportunities. However, after saying all this, Whitland's home record is unblemished this season, with three wins out of three. Whitland opened the scoring after 15 minutes, with a try by centre Gary Evans after a nice break by outside-half Aled Davies, who popped the ball to centre Colin Jones. He flicked the ball inside for Evans to score under the posts, with Davies adding the conversion. Whitland's second try followed some eight minutes later, with Waunarlwydd conceding a penalty, just inside their own half, but after some back chat to referee Mathew Alpin he made them retreat a further 10 yards. Aled Davies drilled the ball into the bottom corner, and with a good take at the front of the line out by Aled Evans, the pack drove to the line. Alan Phillips making his home debut at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn, after signing from local rivals Narberth, crashed over for the unconverted try. Waunarlwydd got on the score board 10 minutes before the break when outside-half Rhys Williams kicked a penalty for the visitors. Four minutes before the break, Whitland's defence gave away a silly try when winger Alan Pope seemed to walk through half of Whitland's side to touch down for a try, which again Williams converted. This left the half-time score 12 points to 10 in Whitland's favour. Five minutes into the second half, a quick tap penalty was taken by scrum-half Andrew Jenkins on the half-way line. He went blind down the narrow side, feeding winger Cristiaan Roets, who out paced his fellow winger, drove through the full back and touched down for an unconverted try. Some three minutes, later Williams hit back with another penalty, and with Whitland's hooker Alun 'Tank' Davies being yellow carded for killing the ball, Whitland had to withstand 10 minutes of pressure from the visitors, which they did so with some resolute defending. Aled Davies relieved the pressure with a penalty some six minutes from the end. He made the scoreline look comfortable when he scored an individual try just before full-time, and with a nice break, he also added the conversion to leave the full-time score 27 - 13 to Whitland. Team fielded: Lee Glanville, Jack Tremlett, Colin Jones, Gary Evans (Gavin Morris), Cristiaan Roets (Dion Thomas), Aled Davies, Andrew Jenkins, Alan Phillips, Alun Davies, Richard Smith (Andrew Morillo), Aled Evans, Carwyn Davies, John Bowen (Ryan Michael), Celt Thomas, Randall Williams (capt.). Whitland Youth

Whitland Youth played Fishguard Youth at home, last Friday night under floodlights, and ran out victorious by 50 points to 10. It was a very entertaining game of rugby, with full credit being given to both sides. Whitland scored eight tries, three by Daniel Newton, one apiece for Owain Davies, Gary Barnes, Lewis Owen, Rhydian Davies and Carl Smith, with Dan Newton converting five. In reply, Fishguard's try scorer was Johnny Smith, with Alin George kicking the conversion and also a penalty. Tomorrow (Saturday), the Youth travel to play Tenby.
